Cr Diana Asmar (Deputy Mayor, Darebin City Council) with local Mayors - Cr Dorothy Patton (Northern Grampians Shire Council), Cr Kylie Zanker (Yarriambiack Shire Council), Cr Mandi Stewart (Horsham Rural City Council) and Cr Eveline Van Breugel (West Wimmera Shire Council) at the Think Women for Local Government forum in Horsham

Think Women for Local Government Forum

Angela Murphy (above left) meets with The Hon Jeanette Powell MP, Minister for Local Government, Minister for Aboriginal Aff airs, as part of the Executive Leadership Program

Horsham Rural City Council was one of 11 Councils in Victoria to host a Think Women for Local Government forum this year. Approximately 50 ladies from across the Wimmera attended the forum in May, aimed at encouraging more women to stand for the next Local Government elections. Women make up 51 per cent of the population, but only 29 per cent of Victorian Councillors are women at present.

Guest speaker was Cr Diana Asmar, Deputy Mayor of Darebin City Council, a dynamic individual and strong advocate for supporting women to become involved in Local Government. Cr Asmar talked about her journey as a young woman on Council. She was fi rst elected in 1998 and has served three terms as Mayor. Cr Asmar was also the fi rst woman in Australia to be elected Mayor whilst pregnant, returning to her Mayoral duties 16 days after the birth of her baby, pushing the boundaries around gender equity, women’s leadership and civic participation.

Tim McDonald Meet our Award Winning Apprentice

The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce has presented Horsham Rural City Council’s Apprentice Motor Mechanic, Tim McDonald with an Outstanding First Year Apprentice Award.

Tim accepted the prestigious award at a special event in Swan Hill in February 2012. Tim is a valued member of Council’s fl eet management team and we congratulate him on his achievements.

Another highlight was an informal discussion led by Cr Mandi Stewart and a panel of local female Councillors who talked about the importance of bringing diversity and balance to the decision-making processes, how they managed their work/civic/family life balance and their positive experiences on Council.
