Flood Recovery

Flood recovery work has continued since the September 2010 and January 2011 fl oods. In the last year, signifi cant work has been done to restore infrastructure aff ected by fl ooding such as roads, community facilities and buildings, recreational facilities such as tennis courts, walking trails and clubrooms, and parks and gardens. Seventy per cent of fl ood damaged roadworks are now complete.

Goal 1 –

Community and Cultural Development

Enhance the development of Horsham and surrounding areas as a diverse, inclusive and vibrant community

The recovery eff ort has also focused on economic and social recovery. Council has conducted community emergency readiness evenings in Horsham, Riverside, Dadswells Bridge, Natimuk and Laharum and were attended by 454 community members. The evenings presented information from the State Emergency Service, Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, Department of Sustainability and Environment, Wimmera Uniting Care, Country Fire Authority, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority, Grampians Wimmera Mallee Water and Red Cross. These sessions provided information to residents to help them plan and prepare for emergencies. An “Emergency Contact Card” containing important phone numbers and common community queries and answers has been sent to all residents and businesses within the municipality in response to community requests made through the fl ood review in early 2011.

Council has also been working with agencies to improve our awareness of fl ooding including studies that have commenced into fl ooding in Natimuk and the area east of Horsham, as well as improving information that is available to the community such as through the fl ood gauges project.
