The refurbished Roberts Avenue Kindergarten

Roberts Avenue Kindergarten and Maternal and Child Health Centre

In January 2012, the Roberts Avenue Kindergarten and Maternal and Child Health Centre in Horsham were declared unsafe, due to continual movement in the footings, and structural issues with the buildings, rendering them unsafe for occupation. The 1950s buildings were aff ected by long term drought and more recent high rainfall conditions.

The two buildings were closed and services relocated immediately. Kindergarten sessions involving 90 families moved to the Uniting Church, sharing space with the Wimmera Uniting Care crèche and the Robin Street kindergarten. The Maternal and Child Health Service was relocated to the Bennett Road Maternal and Child Health Centre as a co-located service. The supported playgroup was relocated to the Rasmussen Road Primary School.

After considering all options, Council made a decision to demolish the Maternal and Child Health building and refurbish the kindergarten building. The Roberts Avenue kindergarten facility closed for Terms 1 and 2 and reopened for sessions in Term 3 to the sound of children having fun in their refurbished environment.

Horsham Rural City Council acknowledges the strong partnerships with Wimmera Uniting Care, Horsham District Kindergarten Association and the Rasmussen Road Primary School to provide timely response and support to enable services to continue as smoothly as possible during this period.

Natimuk Community Centre (NC2

Precinct The NC2

) Committee of Management has had a busy year overseeing the

refurbishment of the former Arapiles Shire Council offi ce and Maternal and Child Health Centre on Main Street, and creating a new community precinct for Natimuk. This project has involved renovating the Council offi ce to create four offi ce spaces that can be leased by small business or community groups as well as equipping the Council Chambers with information technology equipment transforming it into a modern meeting venue. The Arapiles Art and Craft Centre has moved into the precinct and work continues on refurbishment of the old Courthouse building.

This project has been supported by Council, the State Government and philanthropic funds and is an excellent example of community initiative and commitment.
