Darwin Trip for Veteran Defenders

In February 2012, David Eltringham and Cr Gary Bird accompanied Wimmera veterans, Maurice Gerdtz and Laurie Schmidt to Darwin to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Darwin bombings.

Maurice, who is now aged 88, and Laurie, 92, fought with the 19th Machine Gun Battalion during the Second World War. They have many memories of their time in Darwin, and their trip back for the anniversary was very moving and emotional.

Horsham Rural City Council has a strong connection with Darwin and fl ies the Darwin Defenders fl ag 24 hours a day, seven days a week in two locations in the city.
