4to., full early victorian dark blue morocco, boards with french fillet border enclosing ornate and wide gilt borders made up of linked cornucopias with flowers and small stars. The middle border is reminiscent of Edwards of halifax’s ‘cigar’ tool. At each corner of the inner panel is a large gilt sunflower. The spine in six compartments with ornate gilt decoration, gilt dentelles composed of rope-twists and flower heads, all-edges-gilt, marbled endpapers. Pp. (2) + xv + (i) + vii + (i) + 126pp., title-page vignette and 12 wood engraved illustrations, all but one designed by John Bewick. A little spotting to title-page otherwise a handsome copy.


First Bewick illustrated edition. The volume was published as a companion to Goldsmith and Parnell’s Poems issued by Bulmer in 1795. “This work contains the best specimens of John Bewick’s abilities as a designer; all the cuts were drawn by him, except one, but none were engraved by him. Shortly after he had finished the drawings on the blocks, her returned to the north in consequence of ill health. They were engraved by Thomas Bewick, with the exception of the tail-piece at the end of the volume which was engraved by nesbit.” (Pease 68).
