8vo. original mid green wide-weave cloth with a single-line panel in gilt to upper cover, lettered in gilt to spine and upper board, top edge gilt, others untrimmed; pp. [vi] + 302; with title-page in red and black and frontispiece by Graham Robertson printed in green; a nice copy; the spine tanned as usual with some light flecking and minor rubbing to spine extremities, small wear to head of spine involving a few pulled threads, 2mm of surface abrasion to tail, and some shadowing to lower board; internally very fresh and clean with minor spotting to frontispiece tissue, a modern pictorial bookplate to upper pastedown and the original owner’s neat ink inscription to front free endpaper, “constance m. Webster, christmas 1908”; scarce.


First U.S. edition, published in the same year as the first U.K. edition.

8vo. original blue cloth pictorially blocked in gilt to spine and upper board, top edge gilt, others uncut; pp. [viii] + 302; with a black and white frontispiece by Graham Robertson; a very nice copy; externally rubbed to joints, lower board and edges, two corners just turned; internally generally unusually clean with a neat contemporary gift inscripton to front free endpaper, dated 1908, and a previous owner’s coloured bookplate and ink inscription to front pastedown, with uncut edges toned, a few spots to the top margin of the frontispiece and occasional fox-marks and blemishes within.


First edition. This is a copy of the very scarce colonial issue of the first edition which was issued simultaneously with the ordinary trade first of the work. The words “colonial Library” are printed in italics below the title-page imprint and “methuen’s colonial Library” printed to the upper margin of the half-title, which are otherwise identical in lay-out to the ordinary first edition. The half-title and title-page were reset as a bifolium, dropped into a blank bifolium, and bound in as the first quire of the book.

8vo. original lime green card covers to simulate morocco, with a large gilt vignette to upper panel, all edges gilt, neatly stitched in red as issued; pp. [20]; internally ruled in red throughout, with a frontispiece and 13 half-page images all printed in exquisite detail in woodblock colours; a near fine copy with just a faint trace of external dusting.


First edition presented in the de luxe binding. Schuster and Engen 4 (2e).

8 individual mats, circa 180 x 170 mm, with transfer designs by Kate Greenaway printed on squares of eau-de-nil silk, feather-stitched around the perimeter and edged with lace. Seven of the eight pieces have pretty illustrations of children printed on the diagonal. one image is recognisably the child on the stile blowing the trumpet, taken from Under The Window, all are typical Greenaway designs featuring children. Some browning to lace and a few odd marks but generally in very good state.
