Provenance: bookplate of Francis Henry Salvin pasted to half-title with signed inscription “i am indebted to my friend Wm. Broderick for this beautiful lithograph of two trained cormorants named ‘izaak Walton the 2nd’ and ‘chs. cotton’ alias ‘The Artful Dodger’… i have made these addenda to this excellent work upon fish being convinced from experience how useful both the trained otter and cormorant may be made in proper hands.”


First edition. This is an important victorian book on pisciculture made even more interesting by the notes and inclusions of its owner. Francis henry Salvin (1817-1904) and William Broderick (1814-1888) were the author and illustrator respectively of Falconry in the British isles (London, 1855), “the best English book on falconry and a very attractive publication” (Schwerdt ii, p.145). Salvin was also known for his work on cormorant-fishing, having published a section on the subject in G.E. Gage’s Falconry, its claims, history, and practice (London, 1859). it is fascinating to see him and his erstwhile collaborator coming together to produce what is, in effect, a preface to Francis’s influential work; one wonders for whom it was intended.

Galli was born in Soresina in the province of cremona, italy in 1932 and studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Brera, milan between 1950-54. it was around this time that the artist discovered etching. She subsequently abandoned painting altogether in 1963 to concentrate entirely on the exploration and perfection of the medium. As a result, Galli’s extensive body of work spans some fifty years and boasts over eight hundred printed plates.


Thematically, Galli’s work ebbs and flows around the landscape; its winding rivers and snow- heavy hills, the trees and the countryside, the cities and their buildings. These mostly unpopulated vistas convey solitude, tranquillity and mystery.


This exhibition focuses primarily on Galli’s venice series, which was produced between 1983 and 1987 and contains 39 etchings. considered one of Galli’s most successful groups of works, the series was originally suggested to the artist by the italian writers Giovanni Testori and Renzo Zorzi. Recognition for this series came promptly in 1987 with an invitation to exhibit at the cini Foundation, venice, making Galli the first living artist to be awarded such an honour. in addition to the venetian works there will also be supplementary etchings on display produced between 1975 and 2002.


Throughout her career Galli has collaborated with some of italy’s most important writers including Dino Buzzati, Raffaele carrieri, Alberico Sala, Giovanni Testori, carlo Bo, Gianfranco Bruno and Sebastiano Grasso. her work has also been the subject of much discussion by the aforementioned critics and writers as well as David Landau (oxford University), Daniel Berger (metropolitan museum of Art, new York), mina Gregori, Roberto Tassi, Renzo Zorzi, Gianni cavazzini and Gian Alberto Dall’Acqua. notably, in 2003 Edizioni Bellinzona published an impressive catalogue raisonné by marco Fragonara of the artist’s work.


Widely exhibited, Galli’s etchings are held in collections throughout italy and the world, including the British museum, London. This is the first time Galli’s work has been shown in a commercial exhibition in the United Kingdom and we are most grateful for the assistance and support of Fondazione Federica Galli and in particular Lorenza Salamon and Giovanni Gasparini.


All the etchings are in limited editions, printed on the highest quality paper and signed by the artist.
