This album was put together by a lady called Gill Bannerman from Taunton who was a devoted fan of John Gielgud. She used to send flowers to the actor on the opening night of his new productions and in return he would send her signed photographs, often of him in his role.


in this album 18 of the 37 photographs are inscribed or signed by Gielgud. The roles depicted include Richard of Bordeaux (1933), Roger maitland in The Maitlands (1934), hamlet (1935), noah (1935), mercutio (1935), Romeo (1936), hamlet (1936), mason in He Was Born Gay (1937), Richard ii (1937), Joseph Surface in School for Scandal (1937), vershinin in The Three Sisters (1935), and Shylock (1935).

First edition, limited to 1200 copies, of which this is one of only 200 printed on handmade paper, signed by each of the nine authors and Eric Ravilious. A curious and fascinating collaborative work based on the formula of the parlour game “consequences”, to which nine authors contributed a chapter of the unfolding story. The authors are John van Druten, G.B. Stern, A.E. coppard, Sean o’Faolain, norah hoult, hamish maclaren, Elizabeth Bowen, Ronald Fraser, and malachi Whitaker. (Dawson.
