“Adios Amigo” – A concert tribute to John Bennetts by Pamela Dawson Tasker and Pauline McGough
There will be many residents who will say John who? Their number will not include anyone connected with the musical, theatrical scene of the Costa Blanca. John worked with so many entertainers and groups both professional and amateur as their stage manager/ scene designer/coordinator of sound and light and all round professional competent assistant to producers and directors (no end to his talents), that the enjoyment of all concert-goers over the last 18 years or so has been influenced by him.
His name was never in lights, John never sought any recognition – just the knowledge that his efforts were appreciated and that he made a difference.
He made such a difference that when he left us for the bigger theatre in the sky we all missed him greatly. John was always here, ready with advice and practical help. Now he is not. After his funeral, attended by representatives of the groups he worked with over those years, the idea was formed that we would have a concert just for him to say thank you for his contribution to music and dance on the Costa Blanca.
Thus we have “Adios Amigo” and his friends will be on stage to perform extracts from shows that he worked on. Now this will be a remarkable occasion because of the variety of different genres. It will be an amazing hodge-podge of a show with big musical production numbers, singers of swing, and opera, dancers from musicals and sevillanas, comedy ….. you name it! Footlights Theatre Group, Marcias Studio, Candy Wright, Joanna James, Mally Crowle, Sue Holly, Careline Theatre, Vince Tracy, Jenny Renn, Paul Freeman, Annette and Gordon, Pauline McGough, Barry Britten and more. It was impossible to fit in all those performers who wanted to be part of this tribute, but they have then volunteered to be front of house, back stage, raffle ticket sellers etc.. you will see many a familiar face.
Now for the rest: Saturday 9 June in Alfaz Casa de Cultura. Commencing at 20.00 hrs. There will be no set ticket price, entry will be by donation on the night to benefit AECC the national cancer charity that John supported primarily. It will be possible to reserve tickets to collect on the night by phoning Pam on 96 686 0735 or Pauline on 669 315 657 or email
pdawson802t@cv.gva.es. Whatever happens do not miss what will be the most exuberant, astonishing, remarkable send-off for John Bennetts.
PS. “Bar The Office” on Plaza Salvador Dali opposite the Case de Cultura is holding an exhibition of posters of 60 of the Alfaz shows that John worked on.
