Dr Poole talks about being back at his Javea Surgery and where he has been for the last few years.
Dr. Poole what aspects of medicine do you cover ? Well, as a qualified General practitioner (GP) I practice in all aspects of family medicine but I also work for the Spanish NHS in Calpe in Accident and Emergency. I work every other day in the afternoons and evening at Calpe and as general rule
my surgery in Javea is open every day in the mornings from 11am until 1pm except on Sundays.
When and where were you qualified? I studied at The Complutense University of Madrid and qualified in 1982 and have had a surgery in Javea for the past 27 years. I also qualified in 1994 for cosmetic surgery and gained an International Masters degree in that field.
I know that you are Spanish and that you speak very good English - so where did you learn English? Well, having been in Javea for so many years with such a large number of English patients it was helpful to me and my patients to discuss problems in their native language. I did spend some years in America which helped and I also
spent time in Kings Lynn at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital as senior registrar in Accident and Emergency from 2009 to 2011. I did this principally to update myself with the latest medical techniques for practice and my patients which, added to the 2 years I worked in Denia hospital (also in Accident and emergencies), served to update my medical knowledge reasonably well to the latest standards.
So can NHS patients be seen in your Javea surgery? Sadly no, NHS patients have to be seen in the Spanish Centro de Salud either in Calpe or Denia. My surgery is for private patients for which I have to make a reasonable charge.
How much does it cost for a consultation in your surgery? 45.00€ and that includes a normal consultation with the necessary general examination and prescription. Other services such as minor surgery or cosmetic procedures can be discussed on a private informative visit free of any charge.
How does that equate with the cost at the Centro de Salud? In theory, all European citizens are entitled to go to any health centre provided they carry the European health card issued in their respective countries of origin, then they are put on the list of a local doctor which basically works the same as in UK having to ask for an appointment except in the case of emergencies. If they fail to provide that document, they can only be seen at Emergencies after paying and established minimum fee of 100€. In a near future all expatriates will have to prove their residence in Spain in order to be entitled to the NHS services, this in order to cut down what the government now calls “health tourism”.
What procedures can you do at the surgery? Well, as a matter of fact quite a lot, which range from the usual general practice, minor surgery and also a number of cosmetic surgery procedures that can be dealt with using local anaesthetics. In cases which need a general anaesthetic, I normally operate in Clinica Virgen del Consuelo at Valencia.
