Do I have sciatica? What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a generalised term used to describe an irritation of the sciatic nerve and its associated tissues. The sciatic nerve is the largest distal nerve in the body and is formed as several spinal nerves join to become one large nerve. The sciatic nerve controls many muscles and skin sensation in the legs.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

The classic presentation of sciatica is lower back pain with sharp shooting pains into the legs which can extend anywhere from the buttocks right down to the ankle and foot. Usually sciatica will present in just one leg although in more serious cases it can present in both legs. Other presentations can

include leg pain without preceding back pain, pins and needles in the legs or weakness in the legs. Pain for sciatic patients can often be a lot worse in the morning and, depending on the location of the problem, walking can either irritate or alleviate the problem.

What causes sciatica? In the large majority of cases sciatica is caused by changes in the position and the movement patterns in the lower back. A fall or an accident or repeated bad posture can cause the bones in the lower back (vertebrae) to move out of their normal position, pinching or irritating the nerve.

How can I treat my sciatica? The most effective way of fi xing sciatica is through chiropractic treatment. This involves adjusting the vertebrae back to their normal position to ´free up´ the sciatica nerve and alleviate pain. Following the chiropractor’s advice and exercise regime ensures the results are maintained.

Joaquin Herrera Marcia’s testimonial: Joaquin came to our Chiropractic Centre complaining of chronic Sciatica. He had lots of pain in his back but especially in his hips. He couldn’t walk more than ten steps because of the pain. “My back now feels more fl exible and elastic…. painless. My hips are so much better and my walks are longer and much more comfortable. Everyone in the Clinic was very nice. The Chiropractor has explained everything he did during the whole process. I’m grateful for that. I feel I’m in good hands.”
