CHARITIES HELP WITH LIFESAVING

XXXXX XXXXX Xxxxxx xxxxx

Local volunteers living in Cameroon, West Africa, have learned essential lifesaving and water skills, thanks to a joint initiative between STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The two British charities joined forces to deliver a Swim Survive project following a plea from RLSS Cameroon. The initiative came after the World Conference on Drowning Prevention, which was held in Vietnam last year, when Justin Bakinga, President of the RLSS Cameroon, met with the STA and RNLI to ask for their help in promoting the teaching of swimming, survival and rescue.

WATERCO CAPS 30 YEARS WITH ISO 9001:2008

International water treatment products manufacturer Waterco Ltd has capped its 30th anniversary with the award of the ISO 9001:2008 certification for its operating systems. Issued by Moody International Certification Ltd, ISO 9001:2008 is for corporate and overall systems covering the manufacturing and distribution of equipment and all other related products in the swimming pool, spa, water conditioning and water treatment. Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Waterco Ltd Australia, Goh Soon Sinn, said: “This highlights Waterco’s ongoing strategy of innovation and designing quality products.”

Waterco chose the standard as it recognises the quality management of businesses and demonstrates the existence of an effective quality management system which satisfies the rigours of an independent and external audit.

“The certification also enhances Waterco’s image in the eyes of customers, employees and shareholders alike,” Soon Sinn said.

“A key criterion of this standard is that the premise of a well-designed and carefully managed quality management system can provide confidence in creating a product or service that meets expectations and requirements. This is an ideal fit for Waterco, as we focus on innovation, production efficiency and quality, value and timely services to meet our customers’ needs and expectations.” Waterco Ltd was founded in 1981

in Sydney by Goh Soon Sinn as a trading company importing PVC pipes and fittings. It added new products and evolved into a swimming pool equipment manufacturer before listing on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1989.

A THIRD OF COMPANIES SEE INTERNET AS A THREAT SAYS SURVEY

A third of the companies who took part in a 2012 wet leisure survey listed the internet as a business threat for this year.

Replies to those who took part in Golden Coasts’ wet leisure industry survey, released at the SPATEX show, said they felt threatened by discounted internet sales and online cheap imports.

“We are on-line but the margins are so low we don’t even bother to match some prices,” said one respondent.

A total of 71 businesses responded to the survey. Businesses with on-line e-commerce were significantly less optimistic than the norm with 54% seeing 2012 as difficult against the overall sample of 40.4%. The survey reported: Perhaps by putting a part of their business online they found themselves competing with a global market

rather than purely a domestic one. Certainly e-commerce businesses are forced to compete almost wholly on price and that is a strategy that drives down margins and is potentially unsustainable.

Looking at confidence levels in the pool sector 5% saw the year ahead as difficult or extremely difficult against an overall figure of 40%. The pool sector was the least optimistic sector within the wet leisure industry.

Confidence levels in the hot tub and spa sector were higher with just over 40% seeing the year ahead as good or extremely good. Comments included; “Opportunities are that people are not moving house but rather spending money on their homes” and “the opportunity is that we are the only company in the area selling top end hot tubs. One respondent called for the industry to

“raise the profile of the concept of (spa) ownership”.

An impressive 44.4% of those involved in the sauna sector thought 2012 would be OK.

Golden Coast said: “The purpose of the survey was simple: other industries and markets have facts, figures and statistics that are available to all and they help people make better decisions and grow better businesses. We should do the same.”

It adds: “The data on confidence levels is well worth considering and it can be seen that those with a more positive outlook tend to do better.” Golden Coast plans a similar survey for 2013.
