n the United Arab Emirates, water is a respected and much appreciated commodity. Belhasa Projects LLC (BHP) was launched in 1980 as a specialist in swimming pool construction to try and take advantage of the huge potential the country had for recreational use of its water facilities.

Today the company is one of the largest of its kind in the world in the sector. BHP constructed pools can be seen in palaces, hotels, leisure complexes and villas and now the business has diversified into sports coatings, landscaping and maintenance, water treatment projects, concrete repairs and equine pools.

SPATA members and huge supporters of high quality pool supplies from the UK from Certikin to Fairlock’s, Craig Bragdy and many more, Belhasa Projects has become perhaps best known in Britain for its award winning overseas pools at the annual SPATA awards.

This year the company won the award for the best domestic pools in the overseas category for the fifth consecutive year.

Belhasa Projects won gold and silver in the same category.

Greg Garner, Chief Executive of Belhasa Projects, said: “We are delighted to win the SPATA award again as there is a great emphasis on design, construction and outstanding quality of work. We won a gold and silver for two pools we constructed for our clients in Emirates Hills in Dubai. Constructing a swimming pool demands a great deal of skill to ensure trouble free installation, safety and fine aesthetic appeal. We have more than 30 years of expertise in the design, construction, maintenance and refurbishment of swimming pools for homes, educational institutions and commercial establishments.”

The SPATA gold that the company received was for a 15 metre pool featuring a Balinese Zen architecture which was designed by Serendipity and constructed by Belhasa Projects in the Emirates Hills.

The company also received silver for the design and construction of a stunning swimming pool for another villa located in Emirates Hills. Working with UK based interior design firm Candy & Candy, the pool was designed to have a contemporary look. The constructed pool is nearly half the size of an Olympic pool in length, complete with steps, seating areas, planted palm

trees, and a mystically positioned gazebo with a water feature that gives a floating appearance in the evening when the lights are on. “It was just what the client envisioned, a space to relax, unwind and escape from the hustle and bustle of the city,” said Malay Shah, General Manager of Belhasa Projects.

When it comes to swimming pools BHP has become a big player in the Middle East. Belhasa Projects has now constructed over 3,400 swimming pools in the GCC – the Co-operation Council for the Arab states of the Gulf, which includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman.

It incorporates five separate divisions run under the leadership of Managing Director Majed Belhasa and Chief Executive Officer Greg Garner. The company now employs more than 200 staff and has a labour force of nearly 2,000, working on anything from private pools to blue chip construction projects.

In 2011, the company’s swimming pools and water features division finished construction on a range of spas and pools for Grosvenor House II in Dubai and more than hundred pools for residents of Dubai’s glamorous Barari community. Belhasa Projects is the key sponsor of QPS

2012, an international exhibition for pool and spa in Qatar which takes place on 7 - 9 October at the Doha Exhibitions Centre.

The three-day exhibition is expected to draw high net worth individuals looking for the latest designs and technology in swimming pools, water features and luxury spas and reflects the important market of Qatar.

Greg Garner said: “Qatar is an important strategic market for us and events like QPS 2012 give us a chance to showcase our abilities and reach out to more of our target audience. “With the rapid growth of Qatar economy, we are seeing an increasing demand from individuals, educational institutions, hotels and other commercial sectors for uniquely designed aesthetic and international quality swimming pools and spas.”

The company’s first major work in Qatar was in 1984 for a US$1m contract involving the construction of artificial rockwork, waterfalls and lakes. spn
