A survey last spring found that opening a pool for the new season was a bad experience for owners who in record numbers turned to specialist help to get the right systems and the right chemicals in place. It seems what everyone thought was a straightforward task is now a lot more stressful

The process of opening a pool for the new season should be fairly straight forward. A survey last year however suggested that many pool owners were confused about how to make the task stress free. Many said they put it off as long as they could.

Others say they ended up calling in a specialist pool company to do the job for them. The survey carried out by a group of southern counties builders found that opening a pool seems to fill the average pool owner with dread that something might go wrong or that there might be huge costs involved in getting things ready for the new season.

From sorting out the pool cover to testing pumps and filter systems, to getting the pool water ‘shocked’ into action, swimming pools now need to be nursed back to life. It has to be done every year but there are still new options and alternatives to make the task easier and more thorough.

“We take the view that after several months of lying dormant the pool water needs a fairly drastic course of action and chemicals such as chlorine and bromine offer the best and most reliable method of ensuring safe new season water. We ‘shock’ the pool water into action,” adds Richard.

“A lot of us are seasoned pros when it comes to maintaining our swimming pools. It’s almost like second nature. But for a lot of new pool owners especially those like a number of our clients who bought one-piece pools last year it’s a
