Having just turned 26, I’m now nearer to 30 than I am to 20, and I wonder whether this will begin to change my outlook on life? I’ve always been told that I seem older than my years anyway - and even though I’ve heard it on many occasions - I’ve yet to decide whether this is a positive or a negative trait. Perhaps it’s not an age thing, maybe it’s the job! I’ve certainly done things during my time at mondo*dr, that if you’d asked me four years ago if I’d do them, I’d have said no. But I guess that’s the nature of any job - cause and response.

I had cause to visit Stuttgart a few weeks ago, an invitation from APG to look at a new theatre installation at the Palladium Theater. Sound Designer Hendrik Maassen specified APG Uniline cabinets configured in an A-B format, an idea developed by Martin Levan. Martin is best known for his studio work - where he began he career and has now returned - however, in between he delved into the world of theatre, and worked on a number of high profile productions such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats, and Sunset Boulevard. The effect of the A-B system, which essentially means any two singers on stage can each be plugged into a separate system (one into system A and one is system B), eradicating phasing is quite remarkable. During the visit we watched a performance of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca in German, and it was an educational experience to be able to compare the A-B system with the more common left / centre / right line array system that I’m used to. I even managed to follow most of the musical, of course it helped that I’d read a synopsis of the story beforehand! Turn to page 54 to read the full article. Now, it wouldn’t be a March / April leader without mentioning this year’s impending Prolight + Sound in Frankfurt. It promises to be as busy as ever, packed with product launches, new appointments and maybe even some surprising announcements. We’ll be looking ahead to the coming months to find out what influences the news will bestow upon the installation world.
