There are lots of beautiful venues to choose from in Brighton and Sussex

PLANNING YOUR CEREMONY Ceremonies continued from page 7

CIVIL CEREMONY There are so many beautiful venues offering a civil ceremony that, these days, couples really are spoilt for choice. From farms to castles, lighthouses to The London Eye, every sort of setting imaginable is a possibility. When it comes to the nature of the service itself, the most important thing that couples need to remember is that there is no religious aspect to it. You still have to book a registrar to marry you, too, which normally means an extra cost, unless you are getting married at a register office. Your chosen venue will have to hold a license to marry you and the building must be permanent (or a garden with a permanent roof), which means no unmoored boats. Register office ceremonies are short and generally last for 20 minutes following a set format, whereas civil ceremonies tend to be more flexible. They can be interspersed with a selection of music and readings chosen by the couple. These must be agreed and discussed with the registrar well in advance and remember there must be no religious references or content. You may also be able to write your own vows as long as they include the statutory declaration and contracting words so make sure you also discuss your vows with your registrar. ❤
