PLANNING YOUR RECEPTION
Venue options – the pros and cons: ✦ City Hotel
ADVANTAGES: Perfect for couples who want a sophisticated venue. Can be ideal if you have a large number of guests and need good transport.
preferred local suppliers. If you need to find your own caterer, select two or
three if possible from recommendations, then ask each for a quote, so you can compare prices. Provide each with a rough schedule of the day, including the number of guests and menu ideas and whether you want a traditional sit down meal, buffet, hog roast or barbecue. Do let your caterer know how much you want to spend on food, as many will be willing to work around any fixed budget that you have.
MARQUEES
Marquees are increasing in popularity as venue options: they’re a flexible choice that can come in a variety of styles and sizes – or they can serve, literally, as a blank canvas to which you can add your own style with decorations of your choice. You can create a quintessentially English vibe by choosing a frame marquee, while an Arabian-style tent is a great choice for something a little more exotic. Free spirits, meanwhile, might prefer a yurt, teepee or kata (that’s a Scandinavian-style teepee, to the unitiated), all of which can be hired locally.
❤ 12 DISADVANTAGES:
you may end up sharing your venue with another couple. Food and drink maybe more expensive because you’re paying city rates.
✦ Marquee ADVANTAGES:
great for couples hosting the reception at their own homes. Marquees are a blank canvas and, as such, are easy to dress up and personalise. DISADVANTAGES:
costs can mount up once you add extras such as tables, decking and lighting.
✦ Stately Home ADVANTAGES:
can come with that wow-factor and the views provide a picturesque backdrop for wedding photos. Some stately homes are available for exclusive use. DISADVANTAGES: can be pricey.
