Before making a final decision on your cake, make sure you consider:


✦ BUDGET


Generally speaking, the larger and more elaborate your cake, the more it will cost you. Discuss your budget with your cake maker and ask for suggestions on how to keep the costs down.

maker, make sure that there are no hidden costs – will the final price include items such as cake stands, tiers, cutters and cake toppers? Also check if there will be an extra cost for delivery, and make sure that whoever delivers the cake will be able to make any repairs should the cake be damaged on its way to your venue.


Alternative Options


Consider a pyramid of macaroons, a French-style stack of profiteroles or towers of mini desserts or cup cakes. If you don’t have a sweet tooth, a tiered ‘cake’ of whole artisan cheeses is a sophisticated alternative.

The number of people attending your wedding will determine the size of your cake and the number of tiers it includes.


✦ INSPIRATION


The design choices are endless and with colours, ribbons, hand-piped designs and sugar flowers you can easily match dresses and colour themes. Browse wedding magazines and take cut-outs of your favourite designs to your cake maker.


✦ ASK QUESTIONS


Ask to see your cake maker’s portfolio and whether he/she has any references or testimonials. If you have a particular style in mind ask if they have had previous experience of making such cakes.


✦ TASTE TEST


The best wedding-cake makers will host cake tastings, usually by appointment only, so don’t be afraid to ask for a session and actually taste their wares before you sign on the dotted line.
