Real-life Wedding A 34

AFTER LOCKING EYES six years ago across a crowded dance floor during a student night out, Ben and Penelope knew they were going to spend the rest of their lives together…

The proposal

Having asked Penelope’s father for her hand in advance, Ben arranged a romantic champagne dinner on New Year’s Eve. While their song, The Stereophonics’ The First Time I Saw Your Face, played softly in the background, Ben got down on one knee and asked Penelope to marry him. Penelope was so surprised she took five minutes to reply!

On the day, Penelope wore

A white, silk-chiffon, Empire-line gown by Jenny Packham. The gown was decorated with beading at the front, so Penelope wanted to keep accessories to a minimum. She wore an antique diamond bracelet and a pair of diamond earrings, which Ben had given to her as

a birthday present, her 26th birthday coinciding with the day of the wedding. The bridesmaids wore aqua-chiffon, knee-length dresses by LK Bennett.

Ben wore

A French-blue suit from Reiss with a tailor-made white silk waistcoat and tie. Penelope’s father gave Ben a pair of antique cufflinks that had been passed down from generation to generation. The ushers wore navy-blue suits with ivory waistcoats, and aqua ties to match the bridesmaids’ dresses. Both fathers wore silver-grey morning dress with a tie specially chosen to tone with their respective wife’s outfit.

The ceremony:

The couple tied the knot at the Church of St Peter in Hever. Having grown up in the village, Penelope had always wanted to get married there. The ceremony was traditional and intimate, made even more special with
