YOUR WEDDING CAKE is more than just a sweet treat for you and your guests. Cutting the wedding cake is one of the key moments of your big day, as it’s the first task you will carry out together as husband and wife. The cake will also play one of the most important decorative roles at your reception. It’s advisable to book your caterer at least six months before your big day, as it will give you plenty of time to pick the perfect design to complement your wedding theme – and your cake-maker plenty of time to make it. When it comes to picking your design, there are lots of shapes, flavours and styles to choose from, so have fun choosing the one for you. When deciding on the flavour of your cake, vanilla is a safe and popular option. If budgets allow, you can consider having alternative flavours such as chocolate, or something exotic; say, banana and passionfruit. If you’re going to keep with tradition and save the top tier for your first child’s christening or your first wedding anniversary, a rich fruitcake should keep well, or you can remove the icing and freeze it. If you’re expecting a large number of guests it may


be worth remembering that a square cake serves more people than a round one will. And if you’re planning on decorating your cake with flowers, consider using real ones rather than decorative, edible
