FLOWERS CAN BE ONE of the most important components of your wedding day. From those in your bouquet to those that decorate your reception, they will tie any colour schemes and styles together and provide the perfect finishing touch. Flowers can transform a dull space into a beautifully elegant one so, with so much at stake, it’s important to choose the right florist for you.

Book your florist in advance, especially if you’re getting married in the peak season. Start looking through wedding magazines and cut out pictures of the flowers and arrangements you like and take these to your first meeting with your florist to make sure you’re both thinking along the same lines. Before you make your final decision, it may be worth calling two or three florists to see who can give you the best quote. When you’ve booked your florist make sure you take a list of flowers and arrangements you need and who they are for, so that your florist can label corsages, button-holes and bouquets with the names of who they’re for. This will help to avoid any mix-ups on the big day. It may be worth showing your florist a picture of your wedding gown and swatches of material from your bridesmaids’ dresses to help the florist design your and your bridesmaids’ bouquets.

Questions to ask your florist:

✦ If you like your florist’s portfolio, make sure the flowers will be arranged by the same person who created the flowers in the photos.

✦ Will there be a delivery and set-up charge?

✦ What is the cut-off date for new ideas?

✦ What time will the flowers be delivered on the big day?

✦ Are they willing to make a sample in advance of your bouquet and centrepiece?

✦ Are the flowers you want in season? ✦ Are there any hidden costs?

If you’re getting married in a big hotel or country manor you may have to use its in-house team. This can work in your favour because they will have plenty of experience of decorating the venue for weddings. Alternatively, many venues will have a list of recommended suppliers, but make sure you book a consultation and ask to see pictures of previous displays. Keep it local and sustainable: to avoid any unnecessary charges, book a florist who works close to

Wedding Tip...

Plan ahead: if your wedding date is around the time of Mother’s

or Valentine’s Day you’re going to pay more for your flowers, and your florist is likely to be ultra-busy, so may have less time for you!
