PLANNING YOUR BRIDALWEAR Bridalwear continued from page 19
Tips:
✦ Don’t put it off – as a guideline, brides are advised to start the dress hunt six months to a year before their big day as it can take as long as this from the day your dress is ordered for it to be delivered.
picking the complete opposite style of dress to that which they first imagined themselves wearing. Give yourself enough time to shop for your perfect dress, as you’ll
need to order it at least six months before your big day. Make sure you make appointments in advance with a bridal shop or recommended bridal designer as they tend to get booked up. These professionals can recommend the best style of dress to suit your body shape and will also help with the finishing touches. Some bridal shops will let you take a snapshot of you in your dress, so don’t be afraid to ask, as the snaps will come in handy when it comes to making your final decision.
OPTIONS OPTIONS… Bespoke
This can be the dream-come-true option: your dress will fit you like a glove, will be one-of-a-kind and, of course, will be made especially for you. However, it can be a lengthy process, meaning you’ll need patience and possibly a bigger budget than you might with off-the- peg. Plus there’s no way of knowing in advance what the finished dress will look like. Our advice? Pick a recommended dressmaker (ask for references from previous brides they’ve worked with and follow them up!) and let them work their magic.
✦ Book in advance – weekend slots can be booked up as far as 10 weeks in advance, so consider a weekday appointment if you can. You’ll often get more time with the assistants, too, meaning your visit will be more relaxed.
✦ Make the right lingerie count – ask the assistants what lingerie is available. There are lots of types to choose from, whether you want a garment to push you up, suck you in, give you a womanly shape – or all three!
✦ Bring trusted friends – it’s more than likely that you will be torn between two dresses or more, so it’s important to bring a couple of honest friends along to your appointments. You don’t want to be swayed by several competitive voices, so you may want to go to your first bridal appointment alone. Then, once you have narrowed down the choice, make a second trip with your girlfriends and mum.
✦ Be honest about your budget – it’s best to be upfront about how much you’ve got to spend as soon as you walk through the door. This will help you get the most out of your appointment and put you and the dress assistant on an equal footing.
✦ Stay true to you – don’t pick a dress based on other people’s visions or preferences of what a bride should look like. It’s your day, and this is one occasion when it really is all about you and what you want.
