END OF YEAR REVIEW UPM’s full automation

McCormick (UK) Ltd consulted UPM Conveyors for their latest product handling project last year. Based on a total solution involving each stage of production through bag filling to final boxing and palletizing, the specification required UPM to design, programme and build a PLC control to fully automate the interface from the bag filler through to the case erector/sealer. This involved transporting filled bags at 30 per minute through a 90º bend to a reject station incorporating a specially designed air knife to transfer product to a holding area. Should there be a problem with the case sealer erector, there is an alternative bag equaliser

Testing torque

Mecmesin claims their new Vortex-xt attracted widespread interest at last year’s interpack. The easy-to-use, touch-screen tester was, Mecmesin says, shown to quickly measure release, application and stripping torque on a variety of packaging from bottle tops to pump dispensers, pharmaceutical containers to champagne corks. Designed to improve production line efficiency and reduce waste, the Vortex-xt can test bridge torque and slip torque on tamper-evident closures while also enabling identification of bridge breaks to avoid spinners. For more information call 01403 799 979, email info@mecmesin.com or visit www.mecmesin.com.

Korsnäs EPD first

Last year Korsnäs claimed to the first company in the forest industry to supply the market with complete environmental declarations for a broad range of products according to the international EPD standard. The international EPD system sets a standard for the methodology of measuring, compiling and presenting

the particulars of environmental performance. An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a full record of the environmental impact of a product. The information contained in an EPD includes environmental impact data such as emissions into air and water, use of energy and potential environmental gains. For more information call 0046 26 15 10 00 or visit www.korsnas.com/en.

The new Meantime Brewery in Greenwich had new Kagetec BS and GFK tiled floors installed in its’ new brewing hall and bottling plant last year. The Kagetec system put in place by Kemtile comprises of Argelith 18mm fully vitrified hexagonal tiles with an anti-slip surface installed using the sonic vibration method of fixing. This is then grouted with a high strength epoxy. The GFK system, which is more suitable for wet areas with high thermal and mechanical stress, was installed in the 80m2

Brewhouse. The

Brewery was opened in 2000, and Alastair Hook, Brewmaster and Founder of Meantime, has been responsible for 14 Micro-brewery installations over the course of his career. He has found during that time that the biggest mistake made by brewers is putting in sub-standard flooring, which he insisted wasn’t going to happen this time. For more information call 01925 763045, email all@kemtile.co.uk or visit www.kemtile.co.uk.
