Beatson Clark’s new design engineer New Swish packaging

Swish is one of Europe’s major brands of Window Fashions. Owned by Sunflex UK, Swish have extended their range to include a selection of crystal glass tieback hooks, which they have called the Classical Collection. In selecting the product, Sunflex searched all over the world and identified the best source of supply in India. Having developed the range, MD Phil Scott then identified packaging as being key to the products success. Commenting on the development, Mr Scott stated “the traditional presentation of curtain holdbacks uses skin or blister packs but for this range we wanted something more upmarket. Having anything made in India is always a challenge and from experience, I knew this needed to be carefully managed, so I called in Bell Packaging Limited to discuss the project.” Owing to the fragile nature and high value of the product, it was agreed that a new robust packaging was required. Also, shelf impact had to be maximised and the product needed to be seen. Various concepts were considered and the final design incorporates the use of a printed PP box with clear PET covering. The PP gives extraordinary strength to the finished construction and a false bottom was created inside the pack with the fitting kit contained as to not deter from the pack’s appearance. The PP bases and insert were litho printed in three colours. Also, to ensure maximum visibility, PET film was selected for the outer cover. Phil Scott said of the work: “This was the first time we had used Bell’s Indian manufacturing facilities, which was a brave call and viewed by some with a degree of trepidation. Nevertheless, we have worked with Bell UK for over 30 years and have been kept informed on the development of Bell India.” For more information call 01582 459292, email info@bellpackaging.com or visit www.bellpackaging.com.

Glass manufacturer Beatson Clark has appointed a new design engineer to head up the company’s design team. Dean Arey, 36, says he will be bringing in some fresh ideas and looking into new technologies in mould design. He takes over from outgoing design engineer Alan Haigh, who retired in October 2011. Dean has worked in glass packaging design for the last 12 years. His previous role as senior product designer for another glass manufacturer has provided him with a broad knowledge of the industry and a wealth of experience in glass design, project management and 3D CAD technology. “I am looking forward to working even more closely with our customers through the entire NPD process and adapting our design service to suit their specific requirements,” said Dean. “I want to offer an alternative approach to glass design by showing the initial concept as a full visual representation, as you would see from a design agency. Seeing an image of what the end product would look like will make it much easier for our customers to make decisions on the initial design. In addition, we will also be continually exploring new lightweighting opportunities.” For more information call 01709 828141 or visit www.beatsonclark.co.uk.
