AWARDS 2011

WELCOME FROM... Yves Marmion Chairman, European Film Academy Board

For the past 23 years, the European Film Acad- emy (EFA) has been dedicated to celebrating the excellence and diversity of European cinema, to attracting new audiences to European film, and to drawing attention to new European talent. This happens through various activities through- out the year: in 2011 these have included EFA’s short film initiative; the Short Matters! pro- gramme; and a new edition of EFA’s film-maker meetings, A Sunday In The Country.

The EFA Short Film Initiative is a collabora-

tion with 15 partner film festivals across Europe. At each of them, an independent jury presents one of the short films in competition with a nomi- nation in the European Film Awards’ short film category.

Short Matters! is EFA’s short film tour, which

brings the nominated short films to a series of film festivals across Europe and beyond. In the past year this has included more than 40 screen- ings across the world from Sofia to Salvador da Bahia, from Uppsala to Martha’s Vineyard, and from Belgium to Bangladesh!

EFA’s A Sunday In The Country brings

together young film-makers from all parts of Europe to meet with several prolific EFA mem- bers over the course of a weekend. This year’s edition saw 13 young composers and directors meet EFA members Jakub Duszynski (distribu- tor, Poland), Jan AP Kaczmarek (composer, Poland), Max Richter (composer, UK) and Monika Willi (editor, Austria) in Poland. And next year we’ll take this even further with A Sun- day In The Country — Extended in India, bringing together European and Indian film- makers for a week of exchange.

EFA has also been exploring new ways to

reach people and interact with them. With www.europeanfilmawards.eu we now have a website addressing film-lovers worldwide with information on European cinema and the Euro- pean Film Awards and offering a live stream of this year’s awards ceremony. We have also

launched a Facebook page and are in constant dialogue with film fans through this channel as well.

All these activities culminate in the European

Film Awards weekend when we all come together to celebrate outstanding films and achievements of the past year. From all films sub- mitted by European film institutions, associa- tions, media and producers, the EFA Members elected 20 films into the selection. A committee added another 25 films and the members then voted for the nominations which we announced at the beginning of November at the Seville Euro- pean Film Festival. And tonight we will find out who the winners are…

I wish to thank all our friends and allies who

help us to realise all this. A special thank you goes to the EFA Patrons, film companies and institu- tions from across Europe who support our work not just financially but also with their informed input and their presence at the awards ceremony (you will find a detailed list of them on page 16). Thank you very much for your support!

I wish all of you a great evening.
