Team spirit AWARDS 2011

The European Film Awards provides its patrons with the opportunity to strengthen cultural ties within the region and to celebrate the wide diversity of the continent’s films

CENTRE DU CINEMA OF THE FEDERATION WALLONIA BRUSSELS Frédéric Delcor, secretary general “The Federation Wallonia Brussels has long been convinced of the importance

of cinema as a major factor for deepening European identity. The European Film Academy remains a great window for the image of European films worldwide and we deeply hope EFA will also be an effective tool to help European decision-makers understand the role of European cinema in the preservation of cultural diversity.”

EGEDA — FILMOTECH.COM Enrique Cerezo, chairman “The audiovisual producers’ rights management association EGEDA and its video-on-demand website filmotech.com are very

proud to support, since 2001, the European Film Academy and its awards. Cinema is an essential element of what Europeans have in common: a cultural heritage made through hundreds of years of co-existence. There is no better way to express the ideas and values of European nations. Let’s show them to the world.”

INSTITUTO DO CINEMA E DO AUDIOVISUAL (ICA) José Pedro Ribeiro, director “ICA is very proud to be associated with EFA’s European Film Awards. The development of cultural

diversity in European film-making is one of the most important aims of the ICA, supporting not only Portuguese films and directors but also co-productions with Europe. We believe cinema can be an example of how a culture as ancient and diverse as Europe’s can create important, modern art.”

16 n European Film Awards 2011

CIUDAD DE LA LUZ José Antonio Escriva, CEO “Before he died last year, the father of modern Spanish cinema Luis Garcia Berlanga finally saw his dream realised: the 2005 opening

of film studios Ciudad de la Luz in Alicante, Europe’s most modern studio complex. Since then, the studio has worked hard to do its best to promote the interests of the European audiovisual industry with several activities, such as joining the European Film Academy as patrons, hoping this is only the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

EURIMAGES Roberto Olla, executive director “For more than 20 years Eurimages has supported European co-productions and has made a major contribution to promoting

cultural diversity through cinema. The fund encourages producers to strive for excellence in independent cinema. We are proud to be associated with the European Film Awards and to be able to honour, with the European Co-production award — Prix Eurimages, highly talented producers, who are passionate about European cinema.”

LUXEMBOURG FILM FUND Guy Daleiden, managing director “The Luxembourgers are coming! It is with great satisfaction and pleasure that the Luxembourg Film

Fund supports this 24th edition of the European Film Awards. Our national film industry lives above all through European co-productions and for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg it is absolutely important that the work and talent in all these films should be recognised and rewarded.”

DANISH FILM INSTITUTE Henrik Bo Nielsen, CEO “When public budgets are slashed, it can seem tempting to be extra frugal about public funding for the arts. After all, the arts can

hardly be called essential, can they? I’m reminded of the minister who questioned Churchill’s decision to maintain arts funding during wartime, to which Churchill allegedly replied, ‘Then what are we fighting for?’ Art, when it is good, makes us see, think and dream differently. We have to tend the spaces where that can happen.”

FLANDERS AUDIOVISUAL FUND (VAF) Pierre Drouot, CEO “Besides our strong belief in European cinema, we also believe in the European Film Awards as probably the best instrument on hand

today for the promotion and marketing of the wide and colourful variety European cinema has to offer. Therefore we are extremely proud and excited to have joined the European Film Academy as patrons.”

MALTA FILM COMMISSION Peter Busuttil, film commissioner “We are honoured to have the chance to present Malta’s long-standing tradition as an international film

destination to Europe’s foremost industry participants. Malta’s historical and cultural legacy, together with its film-servicing capabilities and financial incentives, offer a unique setting that lends itself to the spirit of European film-making, as well as to the European Film Academy’s commitment to uniting creativity and industry.”
