European Actress NOMINATIONS 2011
The nominees’ work includes portrayals of sisters facing the world’s end, a woman’s encounter with a boy looking for his father, a wife plotting to kill her husband and a mother coping with a disturbed son
KIRSTEN DUNST MELANCHOLIA A European Film Award nominee as she holds a German passport, Kirsten Dunst’s authoritative performance in Lars von Trier’s psychological disaster movie Melancholia was hailed by critics as her best yet after its pre- miere in Cannes this year. The Cannes jury agreed, bestowing the festival’s best actress prize on her. Dunst plays Justine, a newlywed who must
face the news that the world is about to end. Charlotte Gainsbourg, also nominated here (see right), plays her sister Claire. “I think she’s one hell of an actress,” director
Lars von Trier says of Dunst. “She is much more nuanced than I thought and she has the advan- tage of having had a depression of her own. All sensible people have.” The latest US actress to work with von Trier,
Dunst’s credits include Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette, Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and the Spider-Man franchise.
CÉCILE DE FRANCE THE KID WITH A BIKE (Le Gamin Au Vélo) The Kid With A Bike marks something of a departure for Belgium’s Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne in that the auteur duo cast an established star in a central role. The performance from Belgian actress Cécile de France has been lauded by critics and fits perfectly alongside the performance from newcomer Thomas Doret in a finely tuned drama about a damaged young boy who befriends a kind-hearted woman while searching for his father. While preparing for her role as hairdresser
Samantha, de France says the directors were clear her character’s compassionate motivations remained unknown. “They don’t like psychological explanations,” she says. “Samantha is benevolent, radiant, but the Dardennes immediately made it clear I should never overdo it in the sweetness department.” De France’s credits include Clint Eastwood’s
Hereafter, and Jean-François Richet’s Mesrine: Public Enemy No 1 and Mesrine: Killer Instinct.
