European Composer
The music by the nominated composers spans folk, classical and avant garde influences, all in the service of storytelling
LUDOVIC BOURCE THE ARTIST
Ludovic Bource’s original music is a cornerstone of Michel Haz- anavicius’ tribute to silent film, The Artist, and the composer has drawn praise for capturing the feeling of the silent era.
Bource, who has scored all four of Hazanavi-
cius’ films to date, worked closely with the direc- tor before, during and after filming. “The film is set at the beginning of the 30s but we spread our net over a much longer period,” says Bource. “We listened to many things — from Chaplin, Max Steiner and Franz Waxman to Bernard Herr- mann, to mention only a few… We listened and analysed all these treasures, and we went back to the source as well, to the romantic composers of the 19th century.” Although Bource wrote a few themes before
shooting began, he says the bulk of the work hap- pened during the edit, with the music needing to fit closely with the emotions on screen.
ALEXANDRE DESPLAT THE KING’S SPEECH In-demand composer Alexan- dre Desplat has scored a glit- tering array of major European and US movies over his career, including The Ides Of March, The Tree Of Life, Harry Potter
And The Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2, The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, A Prophet, Coco Before Chanel, The Queen and Girl With A Pearl Earring. France-born Desplat’s work on Tom Hooper’s
The King’s Speech has already earned him a BAFTA and an Oscar nomination and he was named film composer of the year for 2011 by the World Soundtrack Academy. He has previously won two European Film Awards for European Composer for Roman Polanski’s The Ghost in 2010 and for Stephen Frears’ The Queen in 2007. He has also scored a total of four Oscar nomina- tions and won a Golden Globe in 2007 for The Painted Veil.
MIHÁLY VIG THE TURIN HORSE (A Torinói Ló) Mihály Vig has worked with director Béla Tarr for over 20 years, having written the
music for The Man From London, Werckmeister Harmonies, the seven hour Satantango (in which Vig also starred) and Damnation, amongst others. Vig’s score for Tarr’s stark drama The Turin
Horse features organ and abrasive violin, which alludes to folk music while also invoking the

ALBERTO IGLESIAS THE SKIN I LIVE IN (La Piel Que Habito) Alberto Iglesias contributes a lush score to Pedro Almodo- var’s The Skin I Live In, a genre-blending tale of a plastic surgeon (Antonio Banderas) creating a new type of skin. A
frequent collaborator with Almodovar, San Sebastian-born Iglesias’ work on Volver and Broken Embraces earned him European Film Awards for composer in 2006 and 2009 respectively. The composer has received a range of major
plaudits over his career including Oscar and BAFTA nominations for his music in The Con- stant Gardener in 2006 and The Kite Runner in 2008. Other recent credits include Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Iciar Bol- lain’s Even The Rain and Steven Soderbergh’s Che: Part One and Two.
