AWARDS 2011
WELCOME FROM... Wim Wenders President of the European Film Academy Dear friends and colleagues,
In these times of crisis in Europe we need to remember that our continent isn’t all about bureaucracy, political scheming and debt management. We shouldn’t forget that Europe is a community, a union, a promise of peace. It needs to be reminded of its spirit, of its soul. We need compassion, not compet i t ion; understanding, not ignorance.
Film is a great way to bring us closer to each
other. It conveys emotions — we learn about each other and we discover not only what divides us, but also what unites us. We should really use this great potential to the fullest, if we believe in the European idea.
We want future generations to live in this place
of peace and understanding, where problems are confronted together, instead of confronting each other. Within the European Film Academy, we contribute to this by facilitating exchange among film-makers, and by giving films a platform that otherwise might go unnoticed outside of the country of their origin.
In this process, the role of ‘selection’ has
gained increasing importance: being included in this list has already become an asset for film- makers. It means exposure to potential distributors and exhibitors, future collaborators and Europe-wide attention in general.
In this spirit I would like to welcome all of you,
new EFA members, film-makers who have had their film in the selection, nominees, friends and allies. In the film world, a united Europe has long become a reality. Like an extended family, we meet at premieres and festivals and at the end of each year at the annual European Film Awards. We have an obligation — and that is in our own interest — to share this experience of communal exchange, of friendly discourse.
We need to improve the exposure that our films get, we need them to travel more
2 n European Film Awards 2011
We need to improve
the exposure that our films get, we need them to travel more extensively
extensively. We need to stay in touch with our audiences — film-lovers across Europe. And we need to make sure that future generations are educated in the language of European film.
After excursions to Copenhagen, Bochum and
Tallinn we are now back in Berlin, at the Tempodrom, an impressive venue in the new heart of the German capital. We come together for a weekend from all corners of Europe to appreciate and celebrate European cinema, to remember some of the year’s highlights, and to make some new discoveries.
This ambitious aim is only possible because of
the hard-working people who dedicate their energy to the European Film Academy and the European Film Awards throughout the year, because of our partners, patrons and allies, and because of the passion of the EFA members themselves. I’d like thank all of you for your support. Merci! Grazie! Tak! Dankeschön! Gracias!
I would particularly like to thank our funders
in Berlin, the Capital Cultural Fund, FFA German Federal Film Board, the German State Lottery Berlin, the German State Minister for Culture and the Media and Medienboard Berlin- Brandenburg for their outstanding continued support. I would also very much like to thank the MEDIA Programme of the EU. Thank you all very much for making the 24th European Film Awards possible.
Have a great and memorable evening.
Wim Wenders President of the European Film Academy
