European Film Academy Short NOMINATIONS 2011
The nominated short films, both fictional narratives and documentaries, all screened in the short film competitions of EFA’s 15 partner festivals. To be eligible, the director has to be born in Europe or hold a European passport
EFA Nominee Ghent BERIK (Denmark) Dir/scr Daniel Joseph Borgman Berik is the fourth short fi lm by New Zealand- born, Denmark-based writer-director Daniel Joseph Borgman. His background working in visual effects proved helpful when depicting this story of a hideously deformed man. The fi lm is set in Kazakhstan where Berik the eponymous protagonist, spends his days alone inside, until an unpopular 11-year-old boy turns up on his doorstep looking for the local bully’s football. Produced by Katja Adomeit for Zentropa and Sweden’s Film I Vast, the film picked up the Canal Plus award at Cannes in 2010, as well as the Grand Prix of the Critics’ Week short film section. Berik went on to screen at the Mel- bourne, Ghent and La Rochelle international fi lm festivals last year. 16 mins
EFA Nominee Bristol DERBY (Romania) Dir/scr Paul Negoescu Directed, written and produced by Paul Negoescu, the founder of the Timishort Film Festival in Romania, Derby is a comedy about a father’s awk- ward encounter with his 15-year-old daughter’s boyfriend. Negoescu sold his car to fund the fi lm with additional fi nancing coming from the festi- val awards for his previous fi lms. They include 2006’s Examen (best director at the CineMAiubit — International Student Film Festival among others) and 2007’s Radu+Ana (genre award at the New York International Independent Film And Video Festival). Derby debuted at the Berlinale before going on to screen at the Karlovy Vary and Sarajevo fi lm festivals, among others. Negoescu was nominated for an EFA award for his short Renovation (Renovare) in 2009. 15 mins
EFA Nominee Locarno FROZEN STORIES (Opowiesci Z Chłodni) (Poland) Dir/scr Grzegorz Jaroszuk Frozen Stories is the graduation fi lm of writer- director Grzegorz Jaroszuk who trained at Poland’s illustrious National Film School in Łódź. The fi lm tells the story of a girl and a boy who work in a supermarket and have been ordered to become more motivated. A TV show helps them turn their lives around. Six of Jaroszuk’s previous films have screened at international festivals. 26 mins

EFA Nominee Grimstad THE GREAT RACE (La Gran Carrera) (Spain) Dir/scr Kote Camacho The Great Race is the directorial debut of Kote Camacho, a storyboard artist and animator whose credits include 28 Weeks Later. Filmed in black- and-white and utilising archive footage, The Great Race is set in 1914 around the Lasarte racetrack in Spain’s Basque country where the world’s best horses and richest gamblers gather for a race with a record-breaking prize. The fi lm won the award for best Spanish short at the 2011 FEC Festival. It was produced by Marian Fernández Pascal. 7 mins
