JEAN-PIERRE & LUC DARDENNE THE KID WITH A BIKE (Le Gamin Au Vélo) The Kid With A Bike, written and directed by celebrated Belgian auteurs Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, tells the story of 11-year- old Cyril, a damaged child looking for the father who left him in a chil- dren’s home. He meets kind- hearted hairdresser Samantha, who agrees to let him stay with her at weekends. It has been described as the nearest to a feelgood film the brothers have ever made. “We wanted to construct the film
as a kind of fairy tale,” explains Jean-Pierre Dardenne, “with bad- dies who make the boy lose his illu- sions, and Samantha, who appears as a kind of fairy. For a short while we even thought of calling the film A Fairy Tale For Our Times.” The screenplay took a year to
