¤8.9m The Guard Element Films’ The Guard is a dark comedy thriller set in Ire-

land about two policemen — a small town Garda, played by Brendan Gleeson, and Don Cheadle’s uptight American cop — who have to work together to investigate a drug-smuggling ring. It earned ¤3.6m in the US and ¤1.6m in Australia. Its biggest European market after the UK is Germany, where it has grossed ¤0.95m (to October 30). It opens in France in December.

Although neither made the European list, Jane Eyre and The Guard played well in both the US and Australia to propel them into the top 50 European films released worldwide in 2011.

Jane Eyre Jane Eyre, directed by Cary Fukunaga, is a faithful adaptation

of the Charlotte Brontë novel, starring Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender. Produced by the UK’s BBC Films and Ruby Films and backed by Focus, it grossed ¤8.1m in the US (its big- gest market), followed by the UK’s ¤5.7m, and ¤2.5m in Aus- tralia for UPI.

Hanna Two European films which place much higher in the world-

wide chart than they do in the European chart are Unknown and Joe Wright’s Hanna. In both cases this is down to hefty US returns of ¤46.8m and ¤28m, respectively. Unknown has also performed well in Australia (¤4.2m), Mexico (¤3.1m), South Korea (¤2.6m) and Japan (¤1.9m). François Ozon’s Potiche, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Biuti-

ful, and Mike Leigh’s Another Year also appear in the worldwide chart but not the European chart as they took the bulk of their European grosses in 2010.
