Welcome to the 24th European Film Awards. I am delighted this illustrious event has returned
to Germany’s capital city this year. Your presence is tangible evidence of Berlin’s renown as a fi lm capi- tal that is both rich in history and state of the art.
A look back shows us Berlin’s history as a fi lm capital is almost as old as cinema itself. Ever since the early days of motion pictures, life in this city has inspired great cinema. And not only is Berlin a popular backdrop for shooting, it’s also a pro- fessional production location with a long history. Germany’s fi lm industry was born in Berlin, and at the beginning of the 20th century, most of the country’s fi lm studios were located here.
Building on this heritage and experience, the capital city region today is sharpening its profi le as an international fi lm and television location. By now, more than 300 movies a year are pro- duced in Berlin-Brandenburg, including some of Germany’s best fi lms and big international pro- ductions. And more and more fi lms made in Ber- lin-Brandenburg are winning major awards. Last
year alone, we were honoured with eight Euro- pean Film Awards, which further cemented Ber- lin-Brandenburg’s reputation as Germany’s most important fi lm industry location.
It also owes its reputation to spectacular events
such as the Berlinale and the European Film Awards, which supply something just as essential to a fi lm capital: glitter, glamour and movie stars.
And in this spirit, let’s get ready for an exciting
2011 European Film Awards ceremony. I would like to wish all of the nominees every success, and I hope the audience will enjoy a fantastic show.
So let’s raise the curtain on the 24th European Film Awards in Berlin!
