WELCOME FROM... Bernd Neumann Minister of State to the Federal Chancellor


After a stopover two years ago in Bochum to launch its year as European Capital of Culture, and after last year’s ceremony in Tallinn, the European Film Awards have come back home to Berlin. Thanks to the European Film Academy, Berlin is once again the capital of European film for this event.


As a very successful forum for European film,


the European Film Awards have made European film-makers more self-confident. Not only do European films have a special quality, they also stand for a world of unique cultural diversity made up of a variety of regional and national cul- tural traditions. In addition, European cinema is both culturally enriching and a significant eco- nomic factor.


I would like to thank the European Film Acad-


emy for presenting the European Film Awards now for the 24th time. The European Film Acad- emy can look back on an incredibly successful history: from its beginnings in 1988 with about 100 members, the Academy has since become an influential pan-European network. The world of European cinema culture today would be unthinkable without the Academy, which has played a major part in establishing the excellent reputation of European cinema around the world.


I would like to wish all award nominees,


recipients and guests an exciting and enjoyable gala evening.
