Through creative and pragmatic programming, Montserrat Galleries dramatically augments the academic learning environment of Montserrat College of Art. The galleries present innovative exhibitions of contemporary art that feature regional, national and international artists, ranging from emerging to established. By celebrating artistic excellence our goal is to cultivate an understanding of the culture and current trends in the art world. Every year 40 or more artists and arts professionals are invited to campus. Classroom visits, collaborative projects, critiques and formal presentations are intentionally designed to satisfy the learning outcomes of our students and faculty.

In January 2011, we were honored to host Boston-based artist Fish McGill for a two-week residency. Fish invited students to construct two, gigantic robots out of wood on the walls of our 301 Gallery and throughout the week, students visited the gallery and drew what they imagined would be the inside of a robot. Fish and his friends (other Boston-based artists) worked alongside students, offering lessons in wheat-pasting and stenciling. The piece was built together and owned by everyone. The following week, Fish visited a variety of classes, Senior Fine Arts Seminar, Graphic Design and Illustration courses, sharing his expertise as well as his experiences making a living as a professional artist.

Montserrat Galleries also offers a variety of professional practice opportunities for students. Beyond Montserrat workshops feature professionals who shed light on issues such as demystifying student loan repayment, maintaining a studio practice while running a business, copyright law and creating a successful artist statement. Considering the notion that the best sources for success in the future are creative ideas, the college prepares our students for careers in the rapidly growing Creative Economy.

At the heart of Montserrat Galleries is a drive to support students and give them the tools and inspiration to become successful professional artists. Through exhibitions and programming, Montserrat Galleries have truly redefined what it means to be a Teaching Gallery. l
