The college continues to ramp up its commitments to the arts on the North Shore in new and innovative ways.
Last year, Writing Center Director Colleen Michaels began hosting The Improbable Places Poetry Tour, which Michaels says "is Montserrat’s way of bringing together student writers, local poets, area businesses, and enthusiastic listeners to celebrate the power of poetry and community."
Each month a new venue and theme are selected and writers are asked to submit their poetry to be read at places like the YMCA pool, bicycle shop, laundromat, and others. The "tour" has resulted in some heightened enthusiasm for the medium and a way to highlight the college’s liberal arts classes.

The energetic Michaels has also brought the college’s involvement to the Salem Literary Festival and the Massachusetts Poetry Festival, of which Montserrat was a sponsor.
Thanks to the efforts of Prof. Ethan Berry, Montserrat was included in the growing Salem Film Festival last year, part of which was screened at the Peabody Essex Museum.
Montserrat continues to encourage young artists through the annual Congressional Art Exhibition and Competition among the area’s high schools. Congressman John F. Tierney co-hosts this annual event in which the winner’s work is sent to Washington DC to be displayed for a year at the capitol.
