year in fundraising

Fiscal year 2011 built on the successes of 2010 with notable growth in annual fundraising. The total number of annual donors, not including Artrageous!25 attendees, rose by 57%. This resulted in increased support of more than $146,000 - a 31% growth over last year. The Montserrat community contributed significantly, led by increases of support of 250% from alumni and 30% from faculty and staff. Current and former trustees of the college were also extremely generous, contributing over $26,000 more than last year. l

Montserrat Trustee Henrietta Gates of South Hamilton talks to Portfolio about what led her to the college and why she remains an active supporter.

How did you become involved in MCA?

I am embarrassed to say that I knew very little about Montserrat prior to being approached about becoming a board member two years ago. But the more I learned about Montserrat and had the opportunity to meet the faculty and many students, the more enthusiastic I became. It really is a gem in our backyards. And being on the board combines two of my passions: education and the arts.

You have seen increased growth and stability at the college. What do you think of the changes to the college?

When I joined the board, the college was not on solid footing. It was clear that the faculty was excellent and attracted very talented students but the college needed strong, consistent leadership. A presidential search brought us Dr. Steve Immerman, who served in leadership roles at MIT. The change since Dr. Immerman took charge almost two years ago is nothing short of transformational. President Immerman, along with the faculty, brings the experience, the commitment, the quality, and the vision to make Montserrat one of the very finest art colleges in the nation.

You give your time and talent to the college by your service, why is it you also donate?

Montserrat enhances our North Shore community in so many ways and I believe that helping to ensure its vibrant future is important. Montserrat educates and transforms students into not only skilled artists but also innovative and critical thinkers, a skill set so valuable in today’s world.

Education is certainly a big piece of what my husband, Heaton Robertson, and I, are interested in supporting. And at Montserrat you can really see the value and impact of each dollar you contribute. I enthusiastically encourage those who are not familiar with Montserrat to come visit the campus, meet the faculty and students, and take in one of the many excellent art exhibits to discover for yourself what a gift the college is to our community. l
