In addition, the college piloted a partnership this year with the YMCA to provide after-school arts classes in the public schools. Next year, the program will be expanded.

Each summer, Montserrat hosts a printmaking booth at the Beverly ArtsFest, an annual celebration and sale of arts and high end crafts held downtown, sponsored by Beverly Main Streets. Six members of the Montserrat community serve on the Beverly Main Streets Board of Directors. The volunteer organization has taken a primary role in finding new and unique ways to revitalize the downtown and make Beverly more of an arts destination. Montserrat has taken a leadership position in this effort.

A new program, Montserrat College of Art’s Art Connection, was also launched last year thanks to the generosity of artist Fay Chandler of Boston, who donated work and helped to fund staffing. Chandler launched the Art Connection program to provide nonprofits with donated art to be displayed in public places, and chapters of this organization have sprouted up around the country. Montserrat‘s program, run out of the gallery office, has placed art in the Beverly Hospital cafeteria and has plans to provide art to the local homeless shelter, River House, and to Children’s Center for Communication in Beverly.

Beyond the major contributions the college makes to the city, a large number of faculty, staff and students also volunteer their time to many excellent causes in the surrounding communities as a way of giving back. l
