60/ SEPTEMBER 2011 THE RIDER REAL Indoor Arena.. Almost Complete!!
ESTATE: By Teri Davidson.
Two weeks into the actual construction of our new arena an the excitement is building. Six months of planning and six weeks for construction. We decided last November we wanted our own facility for our horses. My daughter’s second horse
had passed away suddenly and we couldn’t face the emptiness we felt each time we visited his old boarding barn even though we continued to respect and admire the horse sense the barn owners have.
We found a new horse, a new coach and a new barn to board our beautiful new guy with. Things didn’t go so well with the different barn and we had to move on to a place close to home. It”s a great place but we decid- ed to build our own indoor arena on our 75 acre farm . Initially we had bigger dreams and though we needed to make the cost of the building make sense by going large and having boarders to help defray the overhead cost of building. When we got the final quote from our builder we were shocked. Way out of our league! We cut back on the stall area part of the building going to 10 stalls from 20 but kept our original size for the indoor riding part of the arena. Building plans were drawn, plans were submitted for approval to our local
municipality..no delays , every- thing approved in a few weeks. We had three construction com- panies give us quotes. Huge differ- ence with the the prices but finally decided on Walsh Construction owned and managed by Colin Walsh. Colin is a laid back individual, has built other buildings in our area, which we were free to visit and talk with the owners of. He is a hands on builder and is here swinging a ham- mer with the rest of his crew. I always appreciate the old work ethic where the builder is part of the crew on site. Things are progressing smoothly.
My husband found a company that would deliver re-cycled asphalt that was broken up but clean and we used that for our 800 ft driveway in. Looks and works perfectly. Our soil here is very sandy and we hit a pock- et of pure sand so we won’t need to haul any in for our arena footing! Wonderful ...
Our building is steel 80 x 200’. with 18 ft ceilings. The hardest deci- sion to make was the exterior color for the siding, roof and trims. I love the old fashioned look, which is hard to achieve with steel! I didn’t want anything bland and cold looking and I wanted our new building to match the100 year old barns we have on the property now.
Back and forth, kept changing my mind. Everywhere I drove I was
looking at building colors
...should I do bright yellow with black roof, white windows and red shutters? or red barn with yellow roof and black shutters? Black is the predominant color of my existing barns so black had to be brought in somehow. We decided to paint our existing barn roofs and I did the older stable roof in the gold color that is available in my color selection of steel siding choices. It kind of grew on me. The old stable is board and batton ,painted black, with all white trim and win- dows and a beautiful round topped front window over the front porch. The previous roof was painted white so I changed that to a gold painted to match my steel siding roof choice. Really liked
it..so I’ve gone to those
