The first and only Cana- dian AQHA Pilot Rookie Show was held in Carp, Ontario on August 27th in conjunction with the Eastern Ontario Quarter Horse Asso- ciation All Novice Show. For 2011, AQHA introduced pilot rookie classes for youth, amateur and open divisions. These classes were created by the AQHA Blue- Ribbon Task Force to make the transition from 4-H, open showing or no show experi- ence at all, less intimidating and more comfortable for exhibitors. The goal of the- ses classes is to reach AQHA members of all ages and rid- ing levels. By developing true entry-level classes, AQHA plans to introduce new AQHA members, as well as members who have never shown, to the AQHA
show scene.
A limited number of shows were trialed across North America, and we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to offer one of these shows right here in Ontario. Eastern Ontario has a very large open show pop- ulation and we hoped that this new show would draw new exhibitors to the AQHA show scene, and we certainly did that!
The show day was pic- ture perfect….sunny and warm. The morning got off to a great start with an exhibitors meeting which allowed exhibitors to ask questions. AQHA Executive Director of shows, Patti Carter-Pratt welcomed the exhibitors and explained the Rookie Show concept. As anyone new to showing can attest, having someone who can help answer questions,
help with registration or just be there to calm those horse show jitters, certainly helps make things easier. A num- ber of mentors were on site throughout the show so everyone had the resources to be able to ask for assis- tance at any time. The men- tors ranged from Profession- al Horsemen and women, to seasoned youth and amateur exhibitors. All mentors were clad in bright green t-shirts with “ask me for help” on the back, making them stand out in the crowd, mak- ing it easy to flag one down quickly if needed.
Clinics were held prior to each class discipline. AQHA judge Jamie Simpson conducted a Halter Clinic, Patti Carter Pratt , the Show- manship Clinic, Suzanne Pickard offered the Hunter Under Saddle and Equitation clinics, Doug Pratt , the
Western Pleasure clinic and Jodi Malette conducted the Trail Clinic. All clinics were well attended, not only by exhibitors but spectators as well. Ribbons were handed out by the 2011 Ontario Queen, Ms Jenna Woodley with help from Jasmine and Sharese Rivait.
All Rookie exhibitors received T-shirts for their participation kindly spon- sored by AQHA and Ken and Glenda McLellan as well as samples of “Barnies Horse Treats” for their 4 legged companions. Circuit awards sponsored by Crawford Quarter Horses were present- ed to the High point Open, Amateur and Youth Rookie exhibitors.

Following a long and successful show day, all enjoyed a BBQ and Corn Roast kindly sponsored by RNR Patient Transfer Ser- vice - The Rivait Family and Circle R Saddlery.
I would just like to take this opportunity to first off, thank the many new exhibitors and spectators that came out to our show. We hope you had an enjoyable day. It was certainly excit- ing to talk too many of you and see all the new faces at our show. We have received many positive responses and we look forward to offering another show next year. Per- sonally for me, it was so rewarding to see the many smiles on the faces of these new exhibitors and hear them say how much they enjoyed the day. We all
