Open House Introduces Unique
Breeding
Program To E.S.S.
By Kelly Bowers
Brenda Dubois is opening her small Quebec breeding farm, FERME R.I.G.A. to the public on September 17th for her first open house. When asked to describe her home, she says “Our horse breeding farm is very simple, simpler than many in North America, definitely made in Québec with a european touch.” It is the small size that allows Brenda to pro- vide service with a personal touch and extra attention to the care of her equines. That and the fact that she uses natural methods such as 24 hr. turnout and allows her mares to ween and separate from their foals on their own, in their own time. She believes this leads to healthier and less stressed, happier foals and mares. And so far, it is working.

ney. Each August they will visit another member’s farm for an event and while there, hold an ESS meeting. Other plans are in the works, so check www.eques-

Another unique aspect of her operation is her choice of breeding stock. The horses were added to the family beef farm in 2008 when she bought 2 mares from Pierre Mailloux who was breeding them with french stallions. The broodmares are a Cana- dien/Holsteiner cross, which produce foals who are alert, responsive and respectful with a nice calm tempera- ment and good manners. The Canadi- en bloodlines also give a laid back personality and durability. The hol- steiner bloodline also ensures they are a good size -Her yearlings are 15.2HH already. The Selle Francais (french) stallions were chosen for their strength, power, stamina and trainability. This breed is known to excel at sports such as show jumping, racing, eventing and dressage. In the beginning, not knowing what to expect, she started out slow- ly, one foal at a time. But over time, with selective and deliberate breed- ing, she has produced some fabulous babies who turned out to be great prospects for jumping, dressage and other disciplines. She says that the unique genetic combination produces a slightly different look, conforma- tion and impressive abilities which will likely be proven in competition. Their trainer and rider, Gabrielle Cousin owns and competes on a crossbred Selle Francais mare named Aramisse des Pins. Gabrielle current- ly promotes Brenda’s horses on the North American jumping circuit and they both have faith in these foals as they go on to compete in the coming years.

The Equestrian Social Society, which Brenda is a member of, is sup- porting her by travelling to Quebec to attend her open house and tying it in with their first on-the-road meeting. Although the open house is open to the public, the ESS meeting will be for members only. Attendees will have a tour, the opportunity to see her exquisite foals and hear about her unique breeding program. It all hap- pens at 445 Rang 4 in Ste-Clotilde- de-Chateauguay, Québec, near Hem- mingford on Sept 17th.
Lucie Burdon of Equestrian Social Society explains that ESS has decided to rotate their meetings to various parts of Canada in an effort to meet and involve more people in the group. They currently have four meetings per year planned, each with a different purpose in addition to lots of networking. Brenda’s open house in Quebec is the first leg of that jour-
