OBRA NEWS - September 2011 Letter from OBRA Executive
Well here we are, well into the 2011 OBRA show season! There has been a great mixture of new shows and new arenas as well as arenas and shows that bring lots of great memories to members and horses.
With OBRA being a volunteer managed organization, it’s success only comes from many directors members, sponsors and show hosts working hard to organize, plan, host and clean up from shows. Almost every show relies on show sponsors to provide the great standard of competition we enjoy. In addition to each show, OBRA relies on sponsors to keep the organization running and provide the awesome year end point banquet and award ceremony. We would just like to thank and recognize those sponsors that are currently supporting OBRA in 2011:
GENERAL OBRA SPONSORS Ontario Quarter Horse Racing
The Quarter Horse Racing program in Ontario has backed OBRA and several other barrel racing organizations in Ontario for a number of years now. Not only do they support us but also the great bloodlines being produced in Ontario are going on to prove themselves with a second career in barrel racing. For any horse enthusiasts who would like to watch these horses fly, plan a day at Ajax or Ft. Erie and guaranteed you will love it. There are also seminars for those interested in being more involved in Quarter horse racing.
Jim Wilson Chevrolet Buick GMC Another long time supporter of OBRA! In addition to being an avid fan, this is the place to go for a new or used vehicle. It is worth the drive to Orillia to see their great inventory, enjoy great service and be guaranteed with a great price. Jim also gives fur- ther support to OBRA when any member purchases a vehicle.
Scott and Lisa Gray
OBRA youth have enjoyed some of the best youth payouts anywhere as a result of Scott’s support and sponsorship. This is nothing new to Scott and Lisa as they have poured countless hours and finances to encourage youth in barrel racing, rodeo and other western horse sports.
Southwestern Fields
Sue Collier and Adam Harrison have sponsored all the OBRA hosted events by supplying equipment and expertise to ensure the arena ground id the best it can possibly be! As all show hosts know, the work that goes into arena prep is overwhelming and Adam’s handling of this has been a huge benefit to the OBRA hosted shows.
Resonate Creative
Steve Owen from Resonate Creative has volunteered his ser- vices in presenting our new website, marketing initiatives, website optimization, etc. His enthusiasm and effort are very much appre- ciated.
OBRA 2011 YEAR END POINT SPONSORS Northern Run Farms
Richard, Lorraine and Jessy have generously supplied the sponsorship for YOUTH saddle, buckle, top 5 awards! After watching Jessy enjoy and excel at the youth classes for so many years, she has now finished her last year as a youth. What a com- mitment for Northern Run Farms to now sponsor OBRA youth. At the same time we can all watch the impressive young barrel horses that are doing so well in futurity, open and rodeo.
Gear Shift
What would an OBRA show be without our Michigan friends?! Don has again sponsored the ROOKIE saddle, buckle, top 5 awards. Thanks Don for supporting our rookies 2 years in a row.
Cathy Sykes
Another repeat sponsor! Following their 2010 support, the Sykes have again sponsored POLE BENDING saddle, buckle, top 5 for 2011.
Sure-Gain
A brand new sponsor to OBRA, yet a name well known to all of us for producing great horse feed! For 2011 they are our FUTURITY saddle, buckle, top 5 sponsor. What a year to do it with the world class horses running in OBRA futurities this year.
Spill Experts
Ron Porter has offered to sponsor the HORSE OF THE YEAR award for 2011
Wayne and Bonita Longfield
Wayne Longfield is a welcome sight at the gate entrance for competitors at OBRA events across Ontario. In addition, Wayne and Bonny have sponsored the MOST IMPROVED RIDER award for 2011! What a great award for riders to strive for.
Clingen Quarter Horses
David and Rachel Clingen will again be sponsoring the awards banquet when all these great awards are presented, by transforming the banquet room into a unique venue worthy of all these great achievements
SHOW NEWS!
OBRA headed North! It was a long trip but worth it to be able to park and stay beside Lake Temiskam- ing. However, it would not be a true OBRA
Swimming in New Liskeard Aloha From TEAD in Mt. Hope By Kelly Bowers
There were sunny blue skies, smiling faces and hawaiian leis spotted at (TEAD) The Equestrian Association for the Dis- abled in Mt. Hope recently. On August 17th, a group of chil- dren participating in the TEAD summer camp Hawaii themed day, had some interesting visitors. Volunteers, Kelly Bowers from The Rider, her 17 yr. old daughter, Kathlyn and their 6 yr. old miniature horse, San Diego, came dressed for the tropical occasion, including a lovely lei (flower necklace) worn by Diego. The group of young campers learned a bit about minia- ture horses. They asked and answered interesting horsey ques- tions and then had the opportunity to pet and brush Diego. Some even gave the little horse a nice hug before saying Aloha when he was loaded and on his way home. Lots of fun was had by all. Since its inception in 1978, T.E.A.D. has enhanced the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities through equestrian therapy. The professionalism and compassion of TEAD instructors and volunteers helps their riders improve rid- ing skills, gain a noticeable increase in physical strength and balance and self-confidence which can enhance their entire lives.
On Sept 17th, TEAD (Mt Hope) will host their “Dine in Denim Barn Dance” fundraiser at 6:30. Pig Roast, Live Music, Live auction. Tickets $35 pp or $15 for dance only. For more information call 905-679-8323 or visit the website

New Liskeard show without a rainstorm! The weekend wasn’t all about barrel racing. Some riders took their free time to go fishing, running and swimming with their horses. Thank you to Jennifer for putting on another great show.
Mother Nature was rough on OBRA this past weekend! Due to torrential downpours and thunderstorms the Reid Drainage show had to call it a day on Sunday afternoon during the youth class. A huge thank you to the Thorne family for all their hard work. It doesn’t go unnoticed. We will be back!!!
FINALS!
October 14th – 16th OBRA Finals are at the Clinton Reach Centre. There will be at least $7000 added with $3000 in awards. There may be more money to add to the pot. If you know of any- one that is interested in supporting our finals, please give Carol Crane of David Clingen a call.
