SEPTEMBER 2011 THE RIDER /3 Quarterama Continued from Page 1

won four of the non-pro events during the tournament. The popular ProAm Team competition, held opening night delivered powerful winning performances from veteran professional reiner Molly Stevens (Indian River, Ont.) and her very capable amateur team partner Anne Salter with a brilliant combined score of 148.5. Tremblay and Barre narrowly earned the reserve slot with a score of 144.5, followed closely by Ken Van Alstine (Welland, ON) and Sandy Ebersole (1, Ont.) with a total score of 144 points.

Van Alstine wears many hats at Quarterama, including management of set-up, tear-down and all things in between. Wiping the sweat from his brow on opening night, he admits to long days and plenty of troubleshooting,” but when it all comes together like this we’re happy” referring to his wife Dana’s similar multi-task roles at eastern Canada’s richest and largest reining event. “Dana grabbed the bigger chunk of the cash,” he quipped referring to his wife’s second place finish in the Open Limited division of the Quarterama Derby on their jointly owned horse, “WB Whiz Kid”.

The numbers strong Ontario reiners were not to be shut out of the winner’s circle with 16 yr old Darby Mailhot, con- sidered one of the hottest young stars of the sport, sliding to the winner’s circle on “Custom Chrome Wonder” for her first major NRHA Championship victory. Their heart stopping spins and 30ft plus slides brought the entire house to its feet for the young Mailhot who hails from Lisle, Ont. Strong performances from Ontario reiners included Ital- ian national, Canadian resident Loris Epis (Hamilton, Ont.) who won three major competitions, two of which he tied with himself for first and second place. Loris’ stellar performance during Saturday’s Open division delivered a near record score. The charismatic Epis was riding for five different own- ers, all of whom left Quarterama very happy with prize money jingling in their pockets.

Tim Stanton, husband and business partner of current NRHA World Champion Lisa Stanton, carried the family standard at Quarterama, consistently placing in the feature events each day including a close second, with a narrow half point spread, to Dany Tremblay’s victory in the Open division of the Quarterama Derby. The gregarious Pickering resident was effusive about all the competitors, including his wife. “There were some really super performances here, with tight competition between friends, colleagues and in many cases, family. I’m sure there will be lots of discussion at a lot of breakfast tables tomorrow”, said Stanton with an irrepressible smile on his face.
