President’s Message
We have just finished another two terrific shows – Fletchers Canadian Reining Classic at the end of July and Quarterama Reining Extrav- aganza and Sired Stakes Derby in London two weeks later.
The Fletchers had a whole slate of fun planned, beginning with Friday night’s Get Acquainted with Reining class for new reiners, and then the Outlaw Rookie class and, of course, the perennial favourite – a Freestyle and Fun- style class on Saturday evening. The winners for that class were Heather Vaughan in the Open, Darby Mailhot in the Non-Pro and Sara McKenzie in the Funstyle.
Saturday also featured a Leadline and Walk/Jog class for the little ones, which is always very entertaining.
And of course, we were well fed as always – with complimentary pizza on Friday evening and a beef dinner on Saturday night. The big winners at this show were Bruce and Vicki Brown. Bruce won the Rookie I, Prime Time Rookie and Mens, while Vicki claimed Outlaw Rookie and Ladies and tied for
champion in Rookie II. Congrats to them both for a fabulous showing ~ their smiles were ear to ear!
Quarterama was a superbly run show, with some great highlights, and Ken and Dana Van Alstine and Alan and Linda Barnes deserve a huge pat on the back for the success of that show. Sharon Jones, winner of the Rookie I class, has done a separate writeup on this show. At the end of August, we will be heading to Powassan for Knowlton Ridge’s first reining show and we are looking forward to that, and I hope to see you all there.
Special congratulations go out to our NAJYRC team members – Lane Wilson and Emily Wilson in the Junior Riders, who won team silver, and also to Lane for winning the individual gold. And kudos to Starr Boisvert, Lyndsay Kloster and Darcy Wilson for making the Young Riders team. You all made us very proud.
Until next time, safe sliding. Carol Ivey
Three Days of fabulous horse and rider skills: the Quarterama Reining Extravaganza!
By Sharon Jones
The Quarterama show at London Agriplex (Aug 12 to Aug 14) was indeed an extravagan- za! Over 200 horses competed over the three days and gave the spectators an exciting window into the world of reining.
With 23 classes in all, the Quarterama show saw a great range of horses: from seasoned reiners who know their job to new kids on the block getting their first taste of the arena. There was also a great range of competitors too – from first timers to the well experienced. Luckily the weather held out for the most part: a few sprinkles on Sunday didn’t dampen the spirits of the competitors or spectators. Reining highlights of the three days includ- ed the fun Pro-Am tournament on Friday, and Picov’s ‘Show Me The Money’ class on Satur- day. Watched with great anticipation were the three year old Futurity on Saturday, and the Sired Stakes and Quarterama Derby on Sunday. Reining can be hard and hungry work so the Pizza Party sponsored by Linda and Alan Barnes, Dana and Ken Van Alstine on Saturday night was a great success and the pizza was wonderful (luckily for me, my husband saved me a slice because I was competing!). After pizza, the foyer of the Agriplex heard sounds it probably never has before… whilst we have some talented reiners in Ontario, we don’t seem to have many talented singers… “open mike” karaoke was definitely interesting!
All in all, a fabulous show: kudos to the show management team: Linda and Alan Barnes, Dana and Ken Van Alstine for putting
together a great event. ners:

FOOTNOTE: Sharon Jones had her first rein- ing win at this show as Rookie I Champion on Sunday, riding Aint No Pic. She deserves a big pat on the back for both her riding and writing skills.

dreadful disease.
For more information, please contact Mike Munroe at
mmunroe@rjburnside.com or 519-938-0620 or
president@orha.on.ca.
The Grand Finale will be featuring a special fun class, “What’s your Colour,” which is a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, in support of our members who have been touched by this
With this class, you choose a colour to match the type of cancer you wish to support, and you can dress you and/or your horse in this colour, if you so choose. You can then elect to ride as a standalone rider or as part of a two person team. The top two teams will each win prizes – note that the team member’s individual scores do not also count toward the single rider eligibility.
If a team includes an Open rider, the non-pro score will be doubled and then added to the open rider’s score, and the final team score
will be 2/3 of this total.
The entry fee for this class will be just $20 and all proceeds will go to the Cancer Society.
And as an added feature, if anyone donates $500 to the Canadian Cancer Society for this show, Mike Munroe will wear all PINK for the Saturday afternoon and evening.
There will be the usual Saturday evening pizza party, which is being sponsored this year by Carol Ivey of The Ivey Group, RBC Dominion Secu- rities.
This event will be a great way to end our show season so please be sure to attend.
Youth Association News
The Youth Association has been very strong this year, with active participation in the meetings and fundraisers by about 20 youth members.
Fundraisers have included paid warmups at Meaford and Kemptville, as well as a horse wash at Kemptville.
At the Fletchers’ show, the youth bake sale was a big hit and raised almost $200, with the 50/50 draw collecting another $290. The winner of the 50/50, John Grochow- ina, very generously donated back his $145
winnings, which was truly appreciated by the youth members.
At Quarterama, the youth held another very successful horse wash, to raise a further $142, and they had a lot of fun doing it. Watch for other fundraisers at the remain- ing shows and thank you to everyone who sup- ports our Youth Association, and also to Darby Mailhot, ORHyA President, and Sam Munroe, ORHyA Vice President, for all their hard work. Loris Epis had the run of a lifetime aboard Custom Maid To Order, a 4 yr old mare by Custom Crome x Metermaid To Order owned by John and Sharon Fletcher, at the Quartera- ma show. He scored a 77 in the Open. Neither
New Record Leadline riders at
the ORHA nor RC keeps stats on scores, but it would appear that this could be a record. Congratulations Loris on this phenomenal achievement!!!!!
