Page 16 What Is Fibromylgia?


The symptoms of Fibromyalgia are many and can cause the sufferer a lot of anxiety, bone and muscle aches and pains, depression, fatigue and a lot of stress. Common pain sites include the neck, back, hands, pelvis, shoulders and sometimes pain radiates up into the head. Unfortunately, in most cases it affects women more than men.


They all experience a wide range of symptoms with varying degrees of pain intensity, the constant pain of FM can sometimes be so severe that the sufferer is totally incapacitated. There are other conditions which are associated with FM, such as Chronic fatigue syndrome, and Lyme’s disease.


When someone is suffering with FM, most times they also have the symptoms of I.B.S. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, so the pain is intensifi ed as they may also suffer from frequent abdominal gas, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea and severe nausea. Unfortunately the origin of FM is unknown, however studies in the U.S.A. have shown that reduced nutrient and blood circulation into the muscle cells causes damage to the cells energy producing mechanism, which causes the breakdown of energy into the muscle tissue.


In other words, when there is insuffi cient oxygen supplied to the cells as well as insuffi cient nutrients, there is an imbalance and a great shortage of other bio- chemicals which the body needs. Our bodies deal with this by stealing essential protein from the muscles to convert into glucose for energy, this reaction causes the muscle tissue to breakdown resulting in pains and aches associated with the condition FM.


Patients suffering from FM report that, in most cases, since they have started exercising as a self-help approach to FM it reduces the pain in the joints and has helped greatly. Also N.M.T. massage treatment given on a regular basis helps to improve joint mobility and fl exibility and also pain with reduction. Many of the patients at the clinic report that certain types of food appear to worsen their condition, these include fi zzy drinks, bad fats, (found in take away foods) coffee, and the dreaded alcohol. Mushrooms are a big NO as are most processed foods, and artifi cial sweeteners may cause this condition to get much worse. I do hope that by having a better understanding of the problem of F.M. this will help you the sufferer to deal with this in a much better way.
