Bleeding Gums, cause for concern?

In the 21st century more people lose their teeth due to gum disease than to decay. The good news is that gum disease can be treated if caught in its early stages and a simple routine check up with a thorough dentist will diagnose the disease immediately.

If your gums bleed when you brush them, do not assume that it is normal because it is not. A c o m m o n reaction to the sight of blood is to stop brushing or to think that you are brushing too

hard. Whatever you do, DON’T STOP brushing. Make an appointment with your dentist so that he/she can teach you exactly how to clean and floss your teeth and assess your gums and bone levels in the jaw.

The longer you wait to solve this problem, the worse the gums become, the disease progresses silently, your teeth may start to move and you may notice that your gums are receding (again you may think that you are brushing too hard but this is one of the symptoms of gum disease).

Later on, infections which are surprisingly painless arise (especially if you are on anti-inflammatories for arthritis, back pain or are diabetic... etc as these mask the pain) and at this point the only solution may be to extract the affected teeth.

In the early stages of gum disease the treatment involves scaling and root planings which means removing plaque and tartar around the teeth and root surfaces in conjunction with appropriate antibiotics. Three monthly maintenance cleans are required as well as meticulous home hygiene care with inter-dental brushes of the right size, a good electric toothbrush and daily flossing (even if you don’t like it!)

When you finally pluck up the courage to visit the dentist, even if some teeth cannot be saved, nowadays there is always a solution.

Sometimes mobile teeth can be splinted to teeth either side to stop them from moving. Other times if you have waited too long, several teeth may need to be removed and either replaced by dentures or hopefully by a more fixed option i.e. implants and crowns.

So don’t wait until it is too late and book that appointment to have your gums and teeth checked. At Clinica Dental Zen we offer specialised treatments for gum disease and implants. Tel: 96 642 54 85
