Arts. ‘The World of Old’ saw him invite children to create things from junk.

Originally from Greenwich, London, he has always had a love of the sea. Chris believes the Island is very supportive of artists. He says: “I’ve been given lots of opportunities - by other artists and at schools. It is rich with brilliant opportunities.

“I’m fascinated by the piers, old installations and the surroundings.

I’ve found Island life beneficial - I like the open space and the sea. “I collect

found material from across the Island - all sorts of things. “I enjoy dealing with eccentrics who give me things to include in my work.”

The Loved Ones

Talented jewellery maker prepares to showcase her latest collection

SOPHIE Honeybourne is one of the most exciting new talents on the jewellery scene. Trained at London Royal College of Art she was tempted to remain in the capital after graduating.

Her RCA collection of around 25 exquisite pieces, ranging from £50 to £2,000, sold out. It saw her gain attention and orders from some of the UK’s top shops and galleries.

But instead Sophie returned to her roots and opened a shop and studio in her hometown of Ventnor. Gorgeous boutique Honeybourne Jewellery features unique, ever-changing, inspirational collections.

All pieces are made on the premises and will even incorporate your personal stones into a custom item. Her dramatic, ethereally pretty necklaces in summery ice cream hues are hugely sought after. Fans even make special pilgrimages to the Island just to visit the shop and meet Sophie.

Now she is set to unveil her latest silver work this month at an exhibition titled ‘The Loved Ones’. Inspired by childhood memories and all that came after, it starts on Friday July 22nd with a private viewing from 7pm.

It is then open Saturday 23rd from 10am till 4pm and 6pm till 9pm and Sunday 24th from 10am till 5pm. On show will be stunning silver and gold pieces based around ‘The Loved Ones’ brief.

Sophie said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity to let my imagination take complete control without any thoughts to wearability. “In doing so I discovered new inspiration for wearable pieces that will feature in the exhibition. “This collection explores memories and loved ones, past and present. “It is about the experiences of being a daughter, a sister and a grandchild, featuring wild meadows, veg patches, BMX’s and fancy dress.”

Birgit Ackroyd - Mainly watercolours - Cowes

Swedish artist Birgit - who lives in Cowes overlooking the sea - has been a painter for 12 years. She initially came to the UK and the Island to learn English

Birgit has travelled extensively and recently visited Italy, Vietnam and India. She is influenced by the sea, countryside, pace of life and her friends.

Birgit says: “The Island has a special at- mosphere. It makes you slow down - it’s therapeutic. “It helps me concentrate. I feel it’s my home.”

Birgit is delighted the local artistic com- munity is winning recognition. She adds: “I’m trying out multimedia collage right now but really I’m in love with watercol- our.

“You lose control but in a delightful way. I find that the colours simply work. Sometimes it can take my breath away.”
