KETTLEBELLS With Zach Blow of The West Bay Club
Using kettlebells can improve overall fitness by reducing fat, building endurance levels and increasing mobility and flexibility.
“Although kettlebells have become very popular in recent times in the Europe and with both the armed forces and celebrities, they have been in use in Russia for more than two centuries. A kettle bell basically resembles a cannonball with a handle.
Compared to traditional weights the main advantage of train- ing and exercising with a kettle bell is the dynamic nature of the movements, the two hands swing being the most basic.”
“Unlike a dumbbell or barbell, the kettlebell’s centre of mass is offset from the handle”, explains Zach, “As the weight constantly pulls against your hand both strength and co-ordination are required. At the same time the load is transferred through your arms and shoulders to your core stabiliser muscles. With a typi- cal kettlebells routine you can use upwards of 600 muscles plus you are working your cardiovascular system – it is a total body workout.”
“Compared to conventional free weights, that tend to be lifted slowly, kettlebells can be rapidly swung, pumped and passed from hand to hand. It is estimated that in a strenous one hour kettlebells session it is possible to burn 1,500 calories. With a conventional weightlifting or aerobics class you would be lucky to burn 400 calories.”
However, as Zach is quick to point out, “You do not have to be super strong or super fit to train with kettlebells. As they come in different sizes - starting at 4kg – they are suitable for use by both men and women alike.
Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Aniston and Geri Halliwell all use ket- tlebells.
Top football clubs, including Chelsea and Liverpool, have factored them into their training regimes because kettle bell exercises provide one of the best forms of functional conditioning for professional sportsmen and sportswomen. They are also used by leading physiotherapists for rehabilitation work.”
According to Zach, kettlebells are particularly ideal for those of us who want to achieve maximum results in the minimum amount of time.
