BUDDING classroom designers are hoping to wow Bestival bigwigs with a collection of outlandish outfits.

Pupils at Carisbrooke High have been creating costumes inspired by the gathering as part of coursework.

They were tasked to dream up ideas revolving around this year’s ‘Rock Stars, Pop Stars & Divas’ theme. Students taking the subsidiary diploma in art and design specialising in fashion are all involved.

They must design, model and shoot their creations - with the project counting towards final grades.

The designs will then be unveiled at a fashion show and judged by a celebrity panel including Josie Da Bank - Bestival Organiser and Style of Wights very own fashionista Becky. Charlo Pupils invited their favourite Island mag Style of Wight on board in a bid to receive tips and expert advice.

went along to meet the group and offer pointers.

Both were blown away by the fabulous sketches and concepts the students had already come up with. Christian revealed: “The talent on show was unbelievable. These guys were seriously good.

“Some had put together stunning mood boards while others had created these amazing sketches.

“It was fantastic for us to get along and meet the students and see first-hand what they were doing.”

Fashion teacher Hannah Woodford said: “Prue Lawrence and myself started this new A-level equivalent course in September 2010.

“The qualification allows tutors to pick from a range of optional units so we discussed together which were a must.

“Dress making was one, but we also noticed that many of the students doing the styling unit were continuing photography into A-level and using a lot of photography in their qualification.

“Doing something like this seemed to be a natural progression for the students and a chance for them to showcase

their photography skills.

“It was suggested we bring in outside agency involvement - real stylists and people from industry to inspire and direct the students.

“We felt this was the perfect opportunity to involve Style of Wight and let them give the students a taste of the reality.

“Together we came up with a festival themed project and setting the brief was really exciting. “The students loved the idea but all panicked a little when they discovered it would be for a real magazine with deadlines.

“The workload involved in the timescale set was not something they were prepared for. “But they really benefitted from sitting down with Christian and Becca as it helped them get a fresh look at what they had done and where best to take it next.”

The finished costumes will be judged at a private viewing ahead of the school’s third annual fashion show on July 21.
