Victorian Rhapsody
Queen guitarist set to rock you with 3D showcase at Dimbola Lodge
times in modern music.
BRIAN May (above) is best known as a member of legendary band Queen. But while other musical stars spend their time chasing groupies or chucking TV sets out of windows, he has a PhD in astrophysics.
He’s also an avid collector of old colour stereographs from over 150 years ago. Now May is presenting the vivid snaps from a unique 3D book at DImbola Lodge in Freshwater Bay.
The musician and co-writer, photographic historian Elena Vidal, painstakingly reassembled the series of picture
cards.Together they formed ‘Scenes In Our Village’, the semi-forgotten masterwork of TR Williams, one of the great Victorian pioneers of photography.
The village is Hinton Waldrist, in Oxfordshire, and Williams photos, taken in the early 1850s, are a time capsule of rural life at the time.
Amazingly the images were 3D when viewed through a Victorian device called a stereoscope.
May reproduced this effect using his own specially designed viewer, in book ‘A Village Lost & Found’. It brings scenes to life as villagers and their surroundings from bygone times seem to leap from the page.
A second exhibition charts a photographic rollercoaster ride through one of the most exciting
Acclaimed snapper Chris Gabrin is currently displaying iconic photographs and prints of artists including Ian Dury, Blondie and Elvis Costello.
From ‘Hear’ To Photography - Ten Years Through The Looking Glass encompasses a crazy decade in Chris’s career. It features images taken here and in the US as he toured with some of the biggest names in the business. This is one not to be missed if you’re a fan of the 80’s new wave scene.
Meanwhile, a stunning bronze bust of Jimi Hendrix, masterfully crafted by Chris Cudlip has taken temporary residence in the Patti Smith exhibition room. More information on Chris’s work can be found at

Finally for those who love photographic history don’t miss Paul Martin exhibition ‘Victorians at the Seaside’. It provides a fascinating insight into life in Victorian England, just in time to inspire your own summer seaside adventures and holiday snapshots.
